SALEM Bob Porambo led four Elizabethtown players in double digits as the Blue Jays held off Rochester 93-83 in overtime in the national semifinals. Elizabethtown (29-2) advances to play Otterbein (29-3) in tomorrows 5 p.m. championship game. Rochester (24-5) will play Carthage (27-2) in the 2:30 p.m. consolation game. Porambo was 7-for-9 from the field and connected on five of six 3-pointers. Jon English had 19, Chad Heller netted 18, and Brian Loftus contributed 14. Rochester freshman Seth Hauben had a career-high 39 points and set a single-game Final Four record with 18 rebounds. His putback with four-tenths of a second remaining in regulation tied the score at 75-75. Hauben was the only Rochester player to register double digits, and went for 24 points and 13 rebounds after halftime. Tim Sweeney had a career-best 12 assists in the loss. "We knew coming in we'd be able to hurt them down low," said Hauben, who was 16-for-25 from the floor. "But you have no idea (this performance was coming). I just wanted to have a good game." "There wasn't much we could do about him tonight," said Elizabethtown point guard Rocky Parise. "It was just his night. Was he even averaging in double figures?" He was, at just 10.2 points per game. Elizabethtown twice built double-digit leads in the second half, and was up 67-58 after an Ian Daecher lay-up at 4:25. Rochester quickly trimmed the lead to two over the next 1:12, including five points from Hauben. Loftus netted a pair of free throws with 27 seconds remaining to give Elizabethtown a 75-71 lead. Hauben answered with a layup seven seconds later to draw the Yellowjackets within two. A pair of missed free throws by Parise with 16 seconds left set up Haubens buzzer-beater to force overtime. After Jeff Joss hit a 3-pointer early in the extra session to put Rochester up 78-75, Porambo answered, knocking down a 3-pointer and drawing the foul to convert a 4-point play. Rochester would lead just one more time in the game. "Sometimes you just get lucky," said Porambo, who also came up big for Elizabethtown in the Sweet 16 game with a 3-pointer to beat Cabrini. "I saw the defender running at me and just shot it up there. I saw it bounce around and go in from my back." "I was glad it didn't come down to a French ice-skating judge to decide this game," said Rochester head coach Mike Neer. "Seth Hauben was terrific. Both teams played hard. It was tough to take a young team and counter what they did." Elizabethtown shot a blistering 59.6% in the game (31-for-52), and connected on all three of its overtime attempts. The Blue Jays were a near-perfect 11-for-12 from the free throw line in the extra frame. Rochester outrebounded Elizabethtown 50-23, including a 28-4 advantage on the offensive end. |
