Wiertel scored 33 points to lead Carthage to a 72-51 win against Rochester
in the consolation game of the 2002 Division III Men’s Basketball Championships.
Wiertel connected on 13 of 27 field goals, was a perfect 7-for-7 from
the line, and grabbed seven rebounds as the Redmen concluded their best
season ever at 28-2. Antoine McDaniel was the only other Carthage player
in double figures, netting 10 points.
Rochester (24-6) got 12 points off the bench from Brian Jones. Seth Hauben
had nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds on the heels of his 39-point,
18-rebound performance in Rochester’s overtime loss in the semifinals.
Neither team shot the ball well, as Carthage’s 40% (26-of-65) was just
better than Rochester’s 38.9% (21-of-54). Carthage connected on 17-of-18
free throws (94.4%), compared to Rochester’s 5-of-14 (35.7%) performance.
Carthage turned Rochester’s 16 turnovers into 25 points, while Rochester
managed just four points off 12 Carthage turnovers. The Redmen held a
43-36 advantage on the boards and a 20-3 advantage in second-chance points.
