Rochester
71, Brockport State 62 Rochester advances to the semis for the first time since 1991-92, when they lost to Calvin in the championship game. The Yellowjackets are looking for their second national title, the other coming in 1989-90. Jones was eight of nine from the floor and had four rebounds and two blocks one night after 13 points and 12 rebounds in the sectional semis against Babson. Jeff Joss scored 20 points and his seven of eight from the line as the Yellowjackets provided Brockport its first home loss in 13 games this season. "I am very proud of this team," said Rochester head coach Mike Neer. "Last spring, I challenged our returning players to get better. We had a good recruiting class. We've had two or three good returning classes recently, and between recruiting two or three classes of bright, motivated kids you get better." Rochester jumped out to a 13-4 lead just 5:31 into the contest, and led 39-29 at halftime. The Yellowjackets outrebounded the Golden Eagles 21-8 at halftime and were shooting 53% from the floor. Jones had 13 and made all six of his shots in the first 20 minutes. The Yellowjackets led 52-35 with 11:45 remaining in the second half, but Brockport went on an 18-8 run in the next 9:31 to pull within six. But Brockport could get no closer and fell to 12-1 at Tuttle North Gymnasium this seaoson. "Just a few years ago we were 8-16, and now we have made the Sweet 16 two straight seasons," said Brockport coach Nelson Whitmore. "This is tough to take but we accomplished a lot this season, with a school record in victories. It was a great season." All-sectional team |
