Otterbein 85, Randolph-Macon 72
WESTERVILLE, Ohio — It wasn't pretty, but Otterbein played well enough Friday night to advance to the Elite Eight, downing Randolph-Macon 85-72.

After building a 20-point first half lead, the Cardinals missed their final eight shots of the half. Randolph-Macon chipped away at the lead, cutting the margin to 41-29 at the break.

With Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) player of the year Jeff Gibbs forced to sit nearly the entire second half with foul trouble, a pair of freshmen stepped up to carry the Cards. Scott Hadley, a forward taking Gibbs' spot in the post, scored nine second half points, including a pair of 3s. Hadley finished with 11 points on the evening. He also led Otterbein's effort on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds.

Freshman point guard Tony Borghese dumped in a career-high 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. He was a perfect 7 of 7 at the foul line. He scored 17 of his 25 in the second half.

Senior shooting guard Kevin Shay added 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including three three-pointers. He also collected seven assists and four rebounds.

Shay's biggest shot of the night came early in the second half. Randolph-Macon's Jamal Brunt connected on a 3 to cap a 14-3 Yellow Jacket run, cutting Otterbein's lead to 48-43 just over five minutes in. Shay answered with a three to ignite an 11-2 Otterbein run that widened the lead to 14, 59-45, with 11:00 to play.

Randolph-Macon cut the lead to five again with just under five minutes remaining. Otterbein, however, connected on 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to the secure the victory.

The Cardinals outscored RMC 30-17 at the charity stripe and held a 39-23 edge on the boards.

Randolph-Macon was led by Brunt's 21 points. He was 8 of 11 from the field, including 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. Brunt tallied 17, including all five 3s, in the second half.

Jared Mills added 17 points before fouling out with five minutes left.

Gibbs, who picked up his third foul with 2:28 left in the first half and fourth just two minutes into the second, finished with 10 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes.

Randolph-Macon closes its season at 24-6.

Otterbein, 27-3, advances to Saturday's sectional final. The Cardinals will host DePauw, with the winner advancing to the Final Four. DePauw defeated Washington 90-87 on Mike Howland's three-pointer with two seconds left in the other sectional semifinal Friday night.
