DePauw 90, Washington U. 87
WESTERVILLE, Ohio — For the second consecutive season, Washington University saw its season come to a crushing end as the DePauw University Tigers stunned the Bears, 90-87, in the NCAA Tournament sectional semifinals Friday night.

Mike Howland hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game with two seconds left as the Bears saw their 21-game winning streak come to an end. Last season, Elmhurst hit a 3-pointer with less than three seconds left to hand WU a 78-77 loss in the tournament's second round.

The three-pointer capped a wild last four minutes that saw four lead changes and six ties. Washington's Matt Tabash scored on a layup with eight seconds left, but the Tigers moved the ball quickly up the floor for Howland's winning shot.

The Bears, who came into the game ranked No. 2 in the nation by D3hoops.com, finish the season with a best-ever 25-2 record and their fourth Sweet 16 appearance.

Washington U. led by eight at halftime, 52-44 and pushed the lead to 64-54 at Rook dropped in a three-pointer with 14:46 left. Rook went to the bench with his fourth foul just minutes later, though, and DePauw capitalized with a 19-4 run over the next six minutes to take a 73-68 lead with 7:35 left.

The Bears clawed back on 3-pointers by Joel Parrott and Tabash, sandwiched around a Chris Jeffries lauyp, to take their last lead at 83-82 with 2:06 left. Howland hit the first of two free throws with 20 seconds left to knot the score at 85 and missed the second, but Jeremy Bettis grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. He hit both shots at the line to make it 87-85 before Tabash hit his final layup to knot it at 87.

Jeffries led all scorers with 30 points, including 23 in the first half, and added six rebounds. Rook tallied 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks and Tabash had 10 points, six steals and four assists. Tylka scored 13 points and Parrott had 11 as all five starters finished in double figures.

Howland led the Tigers (24-3) with 26 points, including a 5-for-5 effort from the 3-point line, and added six assists. Joe Ringger had 20 points, Joe Nixon tallied 16 points and six rebounds and Bettis had 15 points and nine boards.

Washington U. shot 53% from the floor and 46% from beyond the arc, but DePauw countered with 52% shooting and a 10-for-17 effort, 58%, from 3-point land. The Tigers also held the edge in rebounding, 38-27.

The Bears started hot at Jarriot Rook hit three consecutive baskets to put WU up 8-2. Chris Jeffries then got into the act, scoring 10 of WU's next 18 points as the Bears stretched their lead to 26-13 just seven minutes into the contest.

DePauw answered with a 10-0 burst, fueled by seven Mike Howland points, to pull within three at 26-13. Jeffries continued to pound away inside and Dustin Tylka dropped in six-straight points as WU took its biggest lead of the half at 41-27 with 4:24 left in the period. The Tigers responded again as Howland dropped in a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to trim the WU halftime lead to eight.

Jeffries poured in 23 first-half points, including seven of eight from the free throw line, to pace the Bear attack. Rook tallied 12 and Tylka added eight as the Bears shot a blistering 59 percent from the floor. Howland led the Tigers with 14 points and Joe Ringger added 11 for the Tigers. DePauw shot a solid 49%, including 5-for-8 from the 3-point line.
