Carthage 71, Gustavus Adolphus 65
KENOSHA, Wis. — No. 1 Carthage defeated Gustavus Adolphus 71-65 on Friday night in the West sectional semifinal at the Carthage Physical Education Center. Carthage will now advance to the sectional championship game versus Lewis & Clark (24-5) on Saturday. Lewis & Clark was a 79-71 winner over UW-Oshkosh (24-6) on Friday night.

Carthage (26-1) led Gustavus Adolphus by one point at halftime, 31-30, after taking a seven-point lead, 12-5, in the early going. The Gusties (24-5) had a pair of four-point leads early in the second half, the last one at 36-32 at 18:19. The lead changed hands several times over the first 10 minutes of the second period. The Gusties’ last lead was 47-46 at 9:58, and the Redmen took the lead for good, 48-47, at 9:40. Carthage went up by as much as 10 points on two occasions in the final minute, the last time at 68-58 with 38 seconds to play. The Redmen held on to win by six points, 71-65.

Carthage shot 46% for the game (22-46), while Gustavus Adolphus shot 44 percent (24-for-51). The Redmen shot 27-for-41 from the free-throw line, while Gustavus Adolphus was 9-for-14. The Gusties outrebounded the Redmen by a 35-28 margin. Three Carthage players scored in double figures. Rob Garnes had a game-high 27 points on eight of 11 field goals, 11 of 15 free throws and eight rebounds. Jason Wiertel had 17 points and seven rebounds, and Antoine McDaniel had 15 points. Chad Henke topped Gustavus with 23 points and 10 boards.
