U. 71, Maryville (Tenn.) 57 Both teams came out on fire as Washington U. hit five of their first six shots and Maryville hit three of their first four shots as Washington U. had a 10-8 lead with 16:17 remaining in the first half. Maryville ran out to their largest lead at 23-18, but the Bears tied the score at 23-23 after a layup from junior Chris Jeffries and a 3-pointer from junior Dustin Tylka. Junior Matt Tabash hit a 3-pointer as time expired in the first half as Washington U. took a 31-30 lead to the locker room. Junior Jarriot Rook and Jeffries each had eight points while Tabash added seven first half points. The Bears shot 46.4% (13-for-28) from the field, but struggled from 3-point range shooting 16.7% (2-for-12). Maryville struggled from the field shooting 35% (10-for-29), but shot 50% (5-for-10) from 3-point range. Rook scored the Bears' first eight points of the second half on two 3-pointers and a layup and Tabash added a 3-pointer as Washington U. extended their lead to 42-35 with 16:55 left. The Bears pushed their lead to 55-46 after a 10-foot jumper from junior Nick Geurts. Rook led the Bears with a career-high 27 points. He also added eight rebounds and five blocks. Jeffries finished with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Matt Ennen led Maryville with 14 points. Washington U. (25-1) advances to play DePauw (23-3) in the sectional semifinals on March 8. |
