79, Lycoming 62 With the victory, which puts Randolph-Macon in the Sweet Sixteen, the Yellow Jackets improve to 24-5 overall, surpassing the 23 wins of 1998-99 (23-6). That was the last season Randolph-Macon was in the NCAA tournament, but the Yellow Jackets did not advance past the second round. The 1990-91 squad finished 26-3 overall, and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. Lycoming's season ends at 20-8 overall. The first half featured eight ties and six lead changes. With the score tied at 24-24 with 4:53 remaining in the period, back-to-back layups by Randolph-Macon senior forward Marshall Rumney put the Yellow Jackets up 28-24, and they would not trail again. Lycoming was down 34-28 with 2:38 left before the break, but the Warriors outscored Randolph-Macon 8-2 to knot the score at halftime 36-36. Randolph-Macon came out of the locker room on fire in the second half, putting together a 17-6 run in the first 6:30 to take a 53-42 lead. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 12 points twice in the first 11:00 of the period. Lycoming did not roll over, however. Trailing 62-50 at the 8:50 mark, the Warriors went on yet another 8-2 run, and reduced the deficit to 64-58 with 7:30 remaining in the contest. The Yellow Jackets held Lycoming to just four more points over the final 7:00, and scored 15 of the final 19 points of the contest. Stein led that surge with seven points, including two 3-pointers. For Randolph-Macon, following the performances by Mills, Stein, and Bergmann, junior guard Jamal Brunt contributed with seven points and three assists. Rumney finished with six points. Junior guard Tim Smith handed out a game-high six assists, and also came up with three steals. Lycoming was led by junior guard Thomas Wesner, with a game-high 26 points, plus team-highs of four assists and three steals. Sophomore center Matt Stackhouse added 15 points and a team-high six rebounds. Senior guard Jason Black scored eight points, and senior forward Chris Napier totaled seven points and five rebounds. |
