74, Hampden-Sydney 68 Freshman point guard Bobby Henning sealed the win by hitting four free throws in the final 12 seconds. CUA (26-2) will play Clark University (22-5) on Friday in a sectional semifinal at a site to be determined. The Cardinals defeated Clark last year to advance to the Final Four. CUA is the only school in the nation to advance to the past five Sweet Sixteens. Sophomore forward Jason Holman scored a game-high 20 points for Hampden-Sydney (23-6). Jeff Monroe added 19 points and David Willson 14. Holman and Willson grabbed a game-high six rebounds each. Craig Avallone (14 points) hit his second consecutive 3-pointer to give CUA its biggest lead of the game, 47-35, with 16:12 to go in the game. The Tigers narrowed the lead to one, 61-60, on a Brandon Randall basket at the 5:58 mark. They trailed by two before Henning (11 points, nine assists) was fouled and hit both free throws with 12 seconds remaining. After the teams exchanged turnovers, Henning stole the ball, was fouled and hit two more from the line for the final margin. Hilleary scored 14 first-half points to lead the Cards to a 34-31 advantage at the break. Wise opened second-half scoring by nailing one of his four 3-pointers. CUA hit all five of its 3-point attempts after halftime and 7 of 12 overall. Hampden-Sydney was just 3 of 15 from beyond the arc. Will Jawando tied Hilleary for the Cardinals' rebounding lead with five and finished with seven points. |
