63, Hope 57 Trailing by 16 points early in the second half, the Dutchmen (21-9) battled back to tie the score 52-52 with seven minutes to play. The teams were tied again at 54-54 with five left before Carthage went on a six-point run, on layups by Jason Wiertel and Antoine McDaniel and a pair of free throws by Jim Oboikowitch. Mike Van Hekken's 3-point basket with 44 seconds remaining cut the deficit to three points, 60-57, but free throws by Antoine McDaniel and Jason Wiertel in the final 30 seconds gave the Redmen a six-point win, 63-57. Don Overbeek led Hope with 20 points while Van Hekken added 13. Carthage, winners of 14 consecutive games, shot 50% for the game (23-for-46), while the Flying Dutchmen shot 43% (23-for-54). Hope outrebounded Carthage by a 34-28 margin including 14-8 on the offensive boards. Three Carthage players scored in double figures. Wiertel had a game-high 23 points on 9-for-15 from the floor, five of five free throws and eight rebounds. McDaniel had 13 points, and Rob Garnes added 12 points and eight boards. |
