Cabrini 47, William Paterson 43
WAYNE, N.J. — Junior guard Kris Pittman scored the game's final seven points, enabling Cabrini to upset William Paterson 47-43 in the second round of the 2002 NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament at the William Paterson University Rec Center on Saturday night.

As a result Cabrini (19-11), champions of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference and winners of five straight, earn their first trip to the Sweet 16 where they will play Elizabethtown next Friday at a site yet to be determined. Elizabethtown defeated Alvernia 95-84 in another second-round game played Saturday night.

William Paterson (19-10), meanwhile, had its six-game win streak snapped despite getting a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds from senior guard Rashaan Barner.

William Paterson used a 12-0 run to cap the first half, allowing the Pioneers to take a 26-18 advantage into the locker room. Barner scored 15 of his points in the first half. However, they did not score for the first 5:31 of the second half and shot only 24.1% (7-of-24) from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Overall, the Pioneers hit only 33.3% of their shots and committed 25 turnovers.

Still, Cabrini trailed by as many as six with 8:33 remaining before its defense stifled William Paterson. The Cavaliers capped the game with a 14-4 run, going ahead for good when Pittman canned a jumper with 2:39 remaining. Pittman scored seven points during the spurt, while senior forward Tim Gordon added four.

However, the Pioneers remained within striking distance until committing turnovers on consecutive possesions in the final 1:30 and senior guard Khalid Coursey, who was averaging 16.6 points coming into the contest but was held to a season-low six, misfired on a 3-point attempt with 30 seconds remaining. Pittman calmly sunk both of his free throws with 3.2 seconds left to ice the game.

Junior center Brian Wood finished a point short of a double-double, ending with nine points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers. Freshman forward Ty Teasley also added nine points.
