Hampden-Sydney 92, North Carolina Wesleyan 79
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Hampden-Sydney junior point guard Marcus Gregory scored 10 points, pulled down nine boards and registered a school-record 13 assists to lead the fifth-seeded Tigers to a 92-79 victory against North Carolina Wesleyan in the opening round of play in the 2002 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament. The Tigers advance to play defending national champ Catholic on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Washington, D.C.

Free throws by Mike Thompson put the Tigers ahead by ten (23-13) at the midway point of the first half but the Bishops fought back to cut the lead to five on a three by Keith Sudler and layup by Mo Boykin. The Tigers then pushed the lead back to nine (29-20) on buckets by Thompson and Jay Patrick with 7:37 to play, but the Bishops again rallied to cut the lead to two (32-30) on a three by Ryan Sinclair.

The Tigers finished the first half on a 15-10 run to lead by seven at the break, 47-40. Hampden-Sydney shot 56% (19-for-34) from the floor in the half and held the Bishops to 40% (14-for-35). However, the Tigers were just 7-for-15 (46.7%) from the free-throw line, while the Battling Bishops made 7-of-9.

The Tigers pushed the lead to 15 points (60-45) with 15:30 to play, paced by six points from Lane Brooks and a pair of baskets from Gregory. Later, with 7:51 to play, a three by N.C. Wesleyan's Bobby Jenkins shaved the Tiger lead to single digits (71-62), but H-SC stormed back with a 10-2 run, again paced by Gregory's superior distribution skills, to open up the team's biggest lead of the game, 17 points (81-64), with 3:21 remaining.

Poor free throw shooting plagued the Tigers over the next minute as the team missed four in a row, while the Bishops made four in a row and hit a 3 to cut the H-SC lead to eight (85-77). However, the Tigers' free throw shooting proved crucial over the final 1:15 as the team knocked down 9-of-10 attempts to seal the contest.

Lane Brooks led all players with 22 points, while David Willson chipped in 19 for the Tigers. Jeff Monroe finished with 12 points, while Gregory had ten points and finished one rebound shy of H-SC 's first-ever triple double.

Rob Smith led the Battling Bishops with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Keith Sudler finished with 14, Ryan Sinclair with 13 and Bradley Blue and Donta Jenkins with 12 each.

Hampden-Sydney shot 48.6% (34-for-70) from the floor, but made just
21% (3-for-14) of its 3-point attempts and shot just 53% (21-for-40) from the foul line. The Tigers forced 18 turnovers and won the battle on the boards, 52-41. NC Wesleyan shot 37.5% (27-for-72) from the floor for the game, 33.3% (10-for-30) from beyond the arc and 83.3% (15-for-18) from the line.
