Gustavus Adolphus 74, Edgewood 65
ST. PETER, Minn. — Gustavus jumped out to an 18-2 lead and held on down the stretch to defeat Edgewood 74-65 for the Gusties' eighth win in nine NCAA Tournament first-round games.

The Gusties (23-4) extended their lead to 41-13 with 1:09 left in the first half before Royce Malkowski drilled two 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer, to get the Eagles within 24 points at the half, 43-19. Coming into the game, Edgewood (18-11) was ranked second in Division III in points allowed, giving up just 58.6 points per game, but Gustavus was the superior defensive team forcing 15 Edgewood turnovers in the opening period.

Eric Nelson led the Gusties in the first half, scoring 11 points on three 3-pointers. Chad Henke scored just two points in the half, the first two of the game, on two free throws as he battled back spasms.

In the second half, things changed drastically as Edgewood opened the session with a 15-4 run on Malkowski's long-range shooting. The Eagles then forced the Gusties to turn the ball over 16 times while chopping the lead down little by little.

In the end, though, Gustavus would not let the lead slip completely away. Edgewood cut the lead to five points at 68-63 with 1:38 remaining on another Malkowski 3-pointer, but Kirk Walberg answered with a running jumper in the lane for Gustavus. On the ensuing rush down the floor, Edgewood had a 2-on-1 break, but Chris TeBrake rejected the layup attempt by Randy Kolinski.

Seconds later, Nelson found David Newell open down court for the two-handed dunk. Walberg and Newell blocked Edgewood's final two attempts.

Malkowsi led all scorers with 27 points on 9-for-21 shooting, while Luke Sadowski added 18 for the Eagles.

Gustavus used four players in double digits to fend off the Eagle comeback. Walberg dropped in 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds on 5-for-6 shooting, while Henke added 12 points and eight boards. Newell threw in 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He also pulled down six rebounds, and Nelson finished the contest with 11 points for Gustavus.

The Gusties will travel to Storm Lake, Iowa, to take on Buena Vista (23-5) in the second round. Gustavus defeated Buena Vista 78-62 earlier this season, on Nov. 23.
