Paterson 67, Illinois Wesleyan 52 Jenkins’ 30 points came on 11-of-19 shooting from the field and a
perfect 6-of-6 from the line. He also had four boards and dished out five
assists. Senior forward Ray Ortiz also scored in double figures with 11
points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Luke Kasten led Illinois Wesleyan (23-7) with 18
points and four rebounds while sophomore guard Laban Cross chipped in with
12 points in 25 minutes of play. The Titans will face Ohio Northern (27-3)
in tomorrow’s consolation game slated for 2:30 pm. The Pioneers jumped out to an early 9-0 lead to start the game.
However, with the score 31-17 in favor of William Paterson, the Titans
went on a 9-4 run to end the first half as they went into the locker room
down 35-26. A lay-up by Jenkins with 5:31 left in the game gave the
Pioneers their largest lead of the game, 62-45. William Paterson shot 43.5% for the game and was 71.4% from the charity
stripe. Illinois Wesleyan finished the game shooting 40.9% from the field
and 75.0% from the line, but committed 19 turnovers to Paterson’s eight. The championship game appearance marks the first for both William
Paterson and Catholic. William Paterson advanced to the national
semifinals in 1999 losing to UW-Platteville, 75-51. Tomorrow’s
championship also marks the third consecutive year the two teams have met
in the NCAA Tournament. William Paterson was a winner in 1999 in the round
of 16, while Catholic came out ahead in the 2000 round of 16. |
