WORCESTER, Mass. — Pat Maloney had 16 points and five assists and Matt Hilleary grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to lead No. 14 Catholic to its second consecutive Elite Eight with a 69-64 victory over Brockport State in an NCAA Tournament sectional semifinal on Friday night.

The Cardinals (25-5), who tied the school record for wins in a season, will face host Clark University at Kneller Athletic Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Clark (24-4) moved on with a 75-69 victory over Kings Point (22-8). The winner advances to the 2001 Division III Final Four in Salem, Va., on March 16-17.

This will be the first time CUA has faced Clark and senior John Ginnity, who played for the Cardinals in 1997-98.

CUA appeared to have Friday's game sewn up when it took a 45-33 lead on a Mike Hartman layup off a diving steal by Kurt Zeisler with 13:02 to go. But freshman Brandon Mills scored eight of his game-high 21 points in a 13-0 run to put the Golden Eagles on top, 46-45, with 8:47 remaining.

Craig Avallone gave the Cardinals the lead for good, 57-54 at the 4:32 mark,
when he hit a 28-foot 3-pointer from the left wing as time expired on the shot clock. CUA, which has won 13 in a row, would never trail again. It was just Avallone's sixth 3-pointer of the year.

Maloney made it 60-55 40 seconds later on another long-range bomb as the Cardinals hung on despite making 16 of their season-high 26 turnovers in the second half. CUA made up for it at the free throw line by hitting six of its final eight foul shots to finish 18-for-23. Brockport (21-9) made just 9 of 19.

The Golden Eagles built a 24-16 advantage with 5:25 to go till halftime before the Cards used a 14-5 run to take their first lead of the game, 30-29 at the break. CUA continued the flurry by scoring the first 11 points of the second half to lead 41-29 with 15:25 left. Freshman Will Morley, who hit 6 of 7 shots, scored four of his 14 points during the spurt. Tim Judge (13 points, four steals) added five points.

Mike Medbury scored 13 points for Brockport and Ricky Hollis had 12 points and seven steals. Hilleary added 12 points and two blocks. Teammate Andy Rice did not score, but recorded three assists and four steals.
