Christopher Newport 84, Roanoke 54
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Christopher Newport jumped to a fast 23-9 lead and took a 39-17 halftime lead en route to an 84-54 win against Roanoke before a Freeman Center-record crowd of 2,111 in the second round of the NCAA Division III basketball tournament Saturday night. The Captains will play 22-5 St. John's, an 84-75 winner against Gustavus Adolphus, in the Sweet 16 at a site that will be announced Sunday.

The victory was CNU's 33rd straight at home, including 18 this year in the Freeman Center.

Following a 7-7 tie, CNU went on a 16-2 run with Terry Gray scoring seven of the points, including a three-pointer and a dunk. After a Roanoke free throw CNU rattled off 12 more unanswered points to forge in front 37-13 with 1:54 to play in the half.

Eventually the Captains extended their margin to as many as 39 points, 71-32 with 6:16 to go as both teams emptied their benches.

Sophomore Carlos Heard paced the CNU attack with 21 points on 8-11 shooting and added six rebounds. All-American Antoine Sinclair added 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Gray contributed 16 points, ten rebounds, six assists, five steals and four blocked shots.

For Roanoke Colby Leftwich scored 12 points and Jason Strickland had 10.
CNU led on the boards, 54-39 and shot .484 (31-64) from the floor. Roanoke was limited to just 21-70 shooting (.300).

The win was the largest margin of victory in NCAA play for Christopher Newport and propels them into the Sweet 16 round for the fifth time. The last time the Captains reached the Sweet 16 was in the 1997-98 season when they lost at Hope.

The Captains are 24-3, while Roanoke finishes its season at 22-7.
