McMurry 86, Mississippi College 82
ABILENE, Texas — For the second time in seven days, McMurry stormed back to defeat Mississippi College. The Indians pulled out an 86-82 victory to slide into the Sweet Sixteen for the second straight season and recorded their 24th consecutive win. McMurry will face William Paterson in the sectionals next Friday night at a time and place to be determined.

The Choctaws (23-5) took control of the game with an 8-2 run to take a 16-8 lead with 11:15 in the first half. Their first-half effort continued as they stretched the lead to as many as 14 points over the next eight minutes with a 35-21 margin over the Indians (24-3). McMurry outscored the Choctaws 9-6 from that point but still trailed 41-30 at the half. Mississippi College shot 50% in the first half to build their lead behind Stacey Keyes’ 15 points with three treys and Keith Bell with 10 points. McMurry connected on just 13 of 34 attempts (38.2%) and committed 10 turnovers.

McMurry came out strong from the half scoring the first six points to cut the deficit to 41-35 with Derrick Harris and Alex Denson each scoring three points. Mississippi College took the game back to 10 points in the next minute on a Kevin Rushing layup and Bell dunk to make it 47-37 at 18:11.

The Indians struck back with a 15-6 run over the next four minutes to pull within a single point from a Travis Hull steal and dunk after connecting on a three-pointer the trip before for a 53-52 score. The Choctaws regained the momentum and slowly built the lead back to 10 points once again to 74-64 with 6:42 in the game as Willie Poster added eight tallies to lead the surge. The lead hit as many as 11 points at 76-65 with 5:54 remaining on Karlos Fairley’s two free throws.

McMurry put together one last run down the stretch. The Indians spurted to a 14-5 outburst behind two Denson three-pointers and three others added points to tie the game at 79-79 with 3:03 to go for the first time since 6-6 in the first four minutes of the contest. Andy Allen of Mississippi College hit a free throw for what turned out to be their last lead at 80-79. Point guard Javi Gonzales hit four of four free throws to take it to 83-80. After a basket by the Choctaws to cut it back to one point, Alex Denson stepped to the line for two free throws and Damon Liverett added the last with a second left to seal the 86-82 comeback victory.

The win avenged McMurry’s only home loss of the season, 97-90, in the home opener to Mississippi College back on November 30th. It will be the Indians' second trip to the sectional round in two years as McMurry made the Elite Eight last year before losing at eventual national champion Calvin.

The Indians had 21 points from Denson and another 14 tallies from Harris. Gonzales and Hull were the other two players in double figures with 11 and 10 apiece. Harris had his second double-double of the season pulling down 14 rebounds while Gonzales had seven assists and three steals.

Mississippi College saw four players in double figures led by Keyes’ 17 points and Bell with 16. Poster and Fairley added 12 and 11 points. Keyes also had a team best eight rebounds to go with three three-pointers.
