Lewis & Clark 101, Linfield 89
PORTLAND, Ore. — Lewis & Clark held Linfield scoreless for the first three-and-a-half minutes, building an 8-0 lead in what was to be a huge first half for the Pioneers. L&C built that bulge to 46-27 by halftime and then held on for dear life in the second half to defeat the Wildcats 101-89 in front of more than 1,600 at the Pamplin Sports Center.

Jeff Auxier and Kristofer Speier were everywhere in the first half for the Pios (21-6). Auxier scored 17 of his 30 in the first, along with six caroms. Speier collected a double-double by the intermission with 10 points and 10 rebounds and finished the game with 20 and 18, respectively. Linfield shot only 8-for-40 (.200) in the first half.

With Linfield's style of play, however, eveyone in the gym knew that the Wildcats (21-6) would make a run — and that they did. Grant Ebright's three-pointer at the 10:17 mark cut the Pio lead to 61-55.

Lewis & Clark answered to build it back to 13 (76-63) at 5:55 on a tip-in by John Mietus. Mietus finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Linfield would not go away though. With some cooperation from missed charity shots by the Pios, and with O.J. Gulley finally heating up hitting two deep three-pointers, the Wildcats gained new life at 92-84 with 1:24 to play. Gulley finished the game with 13 points.

The next play perhaps decided the game. Mietus collected an errant Colin Oraird free throw and fired a three-point attempt. Gulley was called for a foul on the play and Mietus cashed in on all three from the line giving the Pios an 11-point lead with 1:06 left.

In all, the Pioneer starting five scored 97 of the team's 101 points. Oriard added 17 and Scott Davis 15. Ebright led the Cats with 20. Rob Emerson chipped in with 16, and Scott Turner added a double-double in points and rebounds with a dozen each.

Lewis & Clark shot 54.4% (37-for-68) for the game. Linfield shot .368 (32-for-87). L&C outrebounded the Cats 54-43.

L&C will now face No. 1 Chicago in the Sweet 16. That game site is yet to be determined, but the date is set for Friday, March 9.
