Illinois
Wesleyan 65, Wartburg 60 The Knights (24-5) held a nine-point lead late in the first half before the Titans started chipping away. The two teams went back and forth in the second half, reaching a 60-60 tie in the closing moments. But Illinois Wesleyan's Adam Osborn hit a layup to give the Titans (21-6) a 62-60 lead, and Laban Cross ended a defensive stand by rebounding a missed three-pointer and was fouled with eight seconds left. After Cross missed the front end of the 1-and-1, Wartburg rebounded the ball and tried to send it upcourt. But John Camardella stole the outlet pass, hit a layup and was fouled with three seconds left. His free throw made the final margin as Illinois Wesleyan scored the last five points of the game. Sophomore forward Mike Pipho scored 20 points, pulled down seven rebounds and picked up three steals to lead the Knights. Wartburg hit under 40% from the field and struggled from outside the arc, hitting just six of 29 attempts. Luke Kasten was the top scorer for Illinois Wesleyan, tallying 18 points. |
