William Paterson 84, Hampden-Sydney 65
WAYNE, N.J. — William Paterson senior guard Horace Jenkins scored 35 points to lead the WPU Pioneers to an 84-65 victory over Hampden-Sydney in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament second round. Paterson moves into the "Sweet 16" where the Pioneers (24-4) will face McMurry, while the Tigers
close out another impressive season at 24-5.

The game was tied at the half, 37-37, with each team taking turns leading throughout the first half. In fact, the Tigers were up by as many as five heading into the closing minutes before a steal and layup by WPU's Dag Christensen and a three by Ray Ortiz tied the score at the half.

Hampden-Sydney shot 55% (12-for-22) from the floor in the opening half, with freshman Jeff Monroe leading the way with eight points. Meanwhile, the Tiger defense limited William Paterson to just 41% (16-for-39) from the floor.

However, Paterson shot the lights out in the opening seven minutes of the second half, knocking down nine of 12 to take a 13-point advantage. The Tigers rallied behind the cagey play of senior forward Brett Thompson, who forced the Pioneers into three consecutive fouls and went to the line and knocked in five of six free throws, while junior forward Bobby Jackson also knocked down a pair of field goals to shave the lead to six points on two separate occasions.

Hampden-Sydney was unable to convert from the foul line down the stretch however, hitting only one of eight over the final five minutes. William Paterson meanwhile, got two threes and eight consecutive free throws from Jenkins and four points each from Ortiz and Michael Everett to push the lead to 19 at the close of the contest. Paterson shot 62.5% (15-for-24) in the second-half and went perfect from behind the arc (3-for-3).

Bobby Jackson and Brett Thompson each finished with 12 points to lead the Tigers, while senior Aaron Gibbs finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Jenkins led all players with 35 points on 10-for-19 shooting, while Everett and Ortiz wound up with 14 and Christensen with 11.
