88, Wooster 80 Carthage improves to 23-4 and advances to the Sweet 16 for the first time in its history, where it will play Mass-Dartmouth, while Wooster sees its season end at 24-4. The Redmen stormed out to a 14-4 lead just 3:10 into the contest. The Scots rallied, pulling within four on two occasions only to see Carthage built its lead back up to 10 (24-14). In the second half, Carthage led by as many as 18 points (56-38) before the Scots put together a 14-5 run to get the lead under double figures (61-52) with 11:09 to play. The Redmen answered, increasing their advantage back up to 16 at 71-55 before Wooster came back with an 11-1 run to come within six. As they did all night, the Redmen responded and got their lead back to double digits, but the Scots would not go away. In fact, they got the lead down to six again (83-77) with :31 remaining, however, Carthage was able to withstand Wooster's final rally by making 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute. Senior Greg Ktistou, who came into the game averaging 14.7 points, scored a game-high 31 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field, including 6-for-9 from the arc, and 9-for-10 shooting from the charity stripe. He also had seven assists in the win. Sophomore Rob Garnes was also highly effective for the Redmen, totaling 18 points and 12 rebounds, while junior Jason Wiertel and sophomore Antoine McDaniel added 15 and 12 points, respectively. Coming off a career-high 31 points, sophomore Bryan Nelson was again highly effective for the Scots, scoring 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field and 8-of-11 from the foul line and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Playing in his final game, senior Steve Thompson had 18 points, including several three-pointers that keyed Wooster's second-half runs. Sophomore Matt Smith added 13 points, nine of which came during the final 90 seconds on a series of three-pointers. Also noteworthy, the Scots' other senior (Nate Gaubatz) established a school record on Saturday, as he played in his 114th career game, surpassing Stan Aukamp, who played 113 games from 1988-92. Both teams shot nearly identically from the field, as Wooster finished up at 46.8% (29-for-62) and Carthage 45.2% (28-for-62). The difference in the game might have come from the free throw line, as Wooster, which shot 73% during the regular season, was just 14-for-25 (56%). |
