Northern 79, Calvin 68 Ohio Northern had five players in double figures in scoring and used two runs late in the second half to post a 79-68 victory over last year's champion and No. 6 Calvin, advancing to the sectionals for the first time since winning the national title in 1992-93. The Polar Bears improve to 25-2 after posting their 16th consecutive victory, while the Knights end their season at 23-5 and lose for the first time in nine games. The boisterous crowd of 2,467 was the largest in ONU Sports Center history. Ohio Northern will advance and play No. 4-ranked Wittenberg in the Sweet 16 ruond next Friday. No. 13 Mass-Dartmouth and No. 4-ranked Carthage will face off in the other semifinal. The site and game times will be announced Sunday evening. Freshman Chad Bostelman scored 18 points, freshman Jim Conrad added 16 points, senior Mike Heitkamp scored 16 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds, senior Kris Oberdick scored 12 points and freshman Kyle Lowry chipped in 10 for ONU. Oberdick became the 30th member of Ohio Northern's 1,000-point club. In 92 career games, Oberdick has scored 1,011 points, 512 of which have come this season. Calvin was led by sophomore Bryan Foltice with 17, sophomore Jeremy Veenstra with 16 points and a team-high 10 boards and senior Josh Tubergen and freshman Rob Holleman with 10 points each. The Polar Bears used runs of 7-0 and 6-0 in the final 9:58 of the game to turn a 47-45 lead into a 71-55 advantage. Leading 47-45, Heitkamp made two free throws, Bostelman hit a three-pointer and made two more free throws over a 1:34 span to put ONU up 54-45 with 8:12 to play. The margin was 65-55 when Heitkamp, Conrad and Bostelman each hit two unanswered free throws to put the hosts ahead 71-55 with 2:00 remaining. "We made big plays at key points in the game," ONU head coach Joe Campoli said. "I thought our freshmen played very well down the stretch, but this was a total team effort. Calvin is a very good basketball team and played well. This is a big win for our program." Northern jumped out to a quick 21-12 lead in the first 8:10, but the Knights rallied with a 16-4 run to take their largest advantage of the night at 28-25 with 4:06 left in the half. Tubergen threw down a dunk just before the buzzer to tie the game at 32-32 at intermission. ONU made 28 of 34 free throws for 82.4%, while Calvin hit 12 of 13 for 92.3%. |
