Roanoke
70, Savannah Art & Deisgn 62 The Maroons, who improve to 22-6 on the season, will next face Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va., on Saturday evening. The Bees see their season come to a close with a 16-10 overall record. Roanoke's win avenges a 78-67 loss to the Bees in Towson, Md., in November. Robby Pridgen scored a game-high 18 points for the Maroons, knocking down three three-pointers and making nine of his 11 free throw attempts. Senior Brad Dunleavy added 16 points, while senior forward Jason Strickland, who scored just four points, added five rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and four steals. The Maroons took a 31-28 lead into halftime, but saw Savannah A&D come out and score 10 of the second half's first 14 points to take as much as a three-point lead early in the frame. The lead changed hands, and was tied, several times throughout the second half, until a Jaimar Mansel layup with 9:09 to go in the game gave the Maroons a 47-45 lead. The Maroons would never trail in the contest again, and extended the lead to as much as 12 points. The Maroons scored 16 of their final 27 points from the free throw line. Senior Colby Leftwich scored seven of those free throws and for the game finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. Roanoke stepped up its defensive pressure in the second half, forcing 11 SCAD turnovers and holding the Bees to just 32.4% from the field. The Maroons had as much as a nine-point lead late in the first half, but the Bees went on a 8-2 run in the final 2:27 to cut the halftime lead to just three points. The Maroons grabbed that nine-point lead after Pridgen nailed two three-pointers in the span of 34 seconds. He then added two free throws to score RC's final eight points of the half. Marcus Ross scored 14 points and added 15 rebounds for the Bees, who have lost two of three all-time to the Maroons. Freshman Keith Davis added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Savannah A&D kept itself in the game on the glass, outrebounded the Maroons, 49-38 and 21-14 on the offensive end. |
