Hampden-Sydney 60, Gettysburg 52
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Bobby Jackson and Jay Patrick each scored in double figures to lead the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney to a hard fought 60-52 victory against Gettysburg in the opening round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. The Tigers move on to the second round, where they will face William Paterson on Saturday at 7:30 pm in Wayne, N.J.

The Tigers were up by just two at the break following horrendous shooting by
both teams and sloppy ball handling. Hampden-Sydney, coming off an 11-day
layoff since its last game, managed to shoot just 35% (10-for-29) in the first half, but limited Gettysburg to 40% (8-for-20) to hold the 25-23 advantage.

Curtis McNeil tied the game for Gettysburg with a jumper to open the second half, the first of 19 second half points for the guard. But by the 15:40 mark, Hampden-Sydney had pushed its lead to seven, 37-30, by virtue of a 12-5 run sparked by four points from Patrick and three from Jackson.

Greg Schreiber knocked down one of two free throws to cut the Tiger lead to six with 13:48 to play, but Hampden-Sydney then pushed the lead to as many as 11 (44-33) on a three by Patrick with 8:08 remaining. The two teams battled back and forth over the next six minutes and with just under two to play, Hampden-Sydney held a seemingly insurmountable 10-point advantage, 54-44.

However, Curtis McNeil sparked a comeback by the Bullets, hitting two threes in a row, while the Tigers missed two of four free throws on their end. With 48 seconds left in the contest, the Tigers lead had shrunk to 55-52.

At the Tigers end, Hampden-Sydney again missed two of four free throws over a ten second stretch, but the team's defense kept Gettysburg at bay, forcing the team into turnovers and missed shots. Finally, senior guard Kevin Swann converted a pair of free throws to ice the game as the Tigers earned the 60-52 ictory.

Jackson, fresh off an MVP performance in the ODAC Tournament, finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Patrick scored ten. Senior forward Aaron Gibbs ripped down a game-high 12 boards as the Tigers outrebounded Gettysburg 43-36. McNeil finished with 22 for the Bullets, while Terence Callahan scored ten.

Hampden-Sydney shot just 32% (18-for-56) for the game, including a 4-for-21 performance from behind the arc, but forced Gettysburg into 27 turnovers and limited the team to just 35 percent shooting (18-for-51).
