Gustavus Adolphus 69, Nebraska Wesleyan 60
ST. PETER, Minn. — Gustavus Adolphus advanced to the second round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament by knocking off Nebraska Wesleyan (18-8) in first round action, 69-60 on Gus Young Court.

The Gusties (22-5) will take on St. John’s (21-5) on Saturday night in Collegeville, Minn. in second round action.

Gustavus found itself down 15-10 during the first half, but battled back to take an eight-point advantage into the locker room at 38-30. The Gusties had extended their lead to as many as 13 points with just over a minute to play in the first session before the Prairie Wolves fought back, using a five-point run to close out the half.

Gustavus used tenacious defense in the second half to hold off the Prairie Wolves, who fired 59.5% from the floor. Gustavus forced the Prairie Wolves into 27 turnovers. NWU also shot 50% from beyond the arc, as they were 7-for-14 attempts. Greg Lamberty and Seth Harms each scored 14 points for the Prairie Wolves, but it was not enough to counter Bobby Johnson’s game-high 22 points. Johnson surpassed 500 points this season, as he becomes only the 12th Gustie to do so in the history of the program. K

irk Walberg, though, was the heart and soul behind the defensive effort of the Gusties, as he ripped off five passes en route to 17 points, three assists, two rebounds, and an 8-for-8 performance from the free throw line. Chad Henke dropped in 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Gustavus, as the Gusties shot 49% from the floor and 36% from three-point range. Walberg established himself as the all-time leader in steals for a career, as he accumulated his 106th take-away in his three-year career. He has 51 steals on the season, also an all-time record at Gustavus.

The Gusties will head back to St. John’s after falling to the Johnnies last Saturday in the MIAC Championship game, 92-80. It will be the teams’ fourth meeting of the season, as the Johnnies hold a 2-1 edge on the year. The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
