The Red Dragons will look to use their height to their advantage this season as 11 of the 13 players on the roster measure in at 5-9 or taller. Six foot sophomore Samantha Szkotak (New York Mills/New York Mills) is the top returning scorer from last season when she finished third on the team in scoring averaging 7.7 points and 4.2 rebounds a game. Senior Sara Chrystie (Oxford/Oxford) returns for her final season in a Red Dragon uniform and will look to contribute as a guard along with junior Rebecca Bucci (Marlboro/Our Lady of Lourdes). Last winter Chrystie led the team in assists with 119 and steals with 51, while also averaging 7.5 points a game. Bucci finished her sophomore year averaging 7.2 points a game while making a team high 30 three-point baskets. Junior Mary Kate O’Connell (Altamont/Guilderland) led the Red Dragons in blocks last winter with 31 and has the ability to get up and down the floor forcing opponents to defend her.
The recruiting trail brings in a number of new faces that will look to contribute to the mix. First year players Gabi Regan (Troy/Columbia) and Katie Wilverding (Manalapan, NJ/St. John Vianney) will both look to make an impact as freshmen while junior Erika Puffer (Unadilla/Unatego) will look to contribute as a transfer after spending two years at Broom CC where she was a All-Conference player for the Hornets.
The Red Dragons open their 2009-2010 season on November 20th when they travel to the University of Rochester for the Chuck Resler Tournament where they will open play with a game against Rochester at 6:00 p.m.
