Two of the Top 10 teams in the D3hoops.com women's basketball poll locked horns Saturday in Columbus, with No. 6 Baldwin-Wallace downing No. 7 Capital 61-53, to take over sole possession of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Baldwin-Wallace jumped out in front early as Capital struggled with its shooting -- the Crusaders would shoot only 28% (15-for-54) for the game. The Yellow Jackets opened up a 14-point lead with about five minutes left in the half, but Capital fought back to cut the B-W lead to 31-26 at half.

Capital's Kendra Meyer brought her team even at 40-40 on back-to-back baskets midway through the second half, but baskets by Anjee Beard and Holly Koepp put the Yellow Jackets ahead to stay. B-W then iced the win at the line, scoring seven of its final nine points from the stripe to improve to 6-0, dealing Capital its second loss.

Beard led B-W with 20 points, while Meyer led Capital (6-2) with 18 points and nine rebounds.

In other Great Lakes women's action, Kenyon scored a major upset, as the Ladies stunned No. 12 Ohio Wesleyan 66-55 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. The loss was the Battling Bishops' first after a season-opening seven-game winning streak.

Another Top 25 team in the region also stumbled, as No. 17 Mount Union fell to Otterbein 79-77. Purple Raiders' guard Tracy Tabaczynski fired in a career-high 25 points, including five 3-pointers, but couldn't prevent her team from its second loss.

In the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Alma College entered the week only 2-4, but posted big victories against conference powers Hope and Defiance. On Wednesday, the Scots defeated Hope 58-52, despite shooting less than 30% from the field. Saturday, Alma dumped Defiance 55-48 to move to within a half-game of first-place Calvin. Alma's Shannon Gross, who scored 18 points in the win against Hope, was named the league's player of the week.

Meanwhile, Calvin held sole possession of first-place in the MIAA after a 69-61 win Wednesday against Albion, as center Robyn Fennema scored 26 points.

OF NOTE: Heidelberg sophomore guard Rachael Poland tallied 49 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in two games last week, while teammate Nicole Camper tied a school record with six blocked shots in one game. Muskingum forward Wren Lorek pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds against John Carroll. Hope forward Lisa Hoekstra went over the 1,000-point mark for her career, scoring 15 points in the Flying Dutch's 79-59 win over Olivet. Hoekstra now has 1,012 points for her career.

MEN'S HOOPS: The game of the week in the region pitted last year's OAC regular season and tournament champion and last year's MIAA tournament champion. The result was a barn-burner in Ada, Ohio, on Wednesday with No. 16 Ohio Northern holding off Defiance 84-82.

The host Polar Bears shot out to a 45-32 halftime lead, but the Yellow Jackets came storming back in the second half. Seth Newlove's 3-pointer with 3:29 to play put Defiance ahead 74-73, but Ohio Northern came on strong down the stretch to pull out the win. Jeremy Thompson led the Polar Bears with 23 points and Scott Unverferth added 21, while Defiance's Chad Kahle continued his strong play inside with 18 points and 16 rebounds. The 16 boards gave Kahle 53 caroms in a three-game span. Defiance suffered another tough road loss later in the week, falling to Wheaton 86-85.

With four of the top seven teams in last week's D3hoops.com men's poll losing in the past week, Calvin College is poised to move into the top five. The No. 8 Knights (8-0) downed crosstown rival Aquinas for the second time this season, 89-76, on Tuesday, then thrashed Orchard Lake St. Mary two nights later, 99-65. Calvin freshman Jeremy Veenstra became the third Knight player in four weeks to capture MIAA player of the week honors, joining frontcourt mates Aaron Winkle and Brian Krosschel.

Another MIAA team, Albion, pulled off a surprise win, toppling Tri-State (Ind.), the No. 9-ranked team in NAIA Division II 80-76 in overtime. The Britons' reserves outscored the Thunder's bench 37-8 led by Steve Champine's 20 points.

In the NCAC, Wooster and Wittenberg continued to stay hot. The Scots clobbered Oberlin 91-53, while the Tigers took down Ohio Wesleyan 71-63 and Hiram 73-56.

In the OAC, Marietta continued its hot start with a 74-62 win over Mount Union, but the Pioneers had their season-opening six-game winning streak snapped Saturday as they were pounded by Heidelberg 80-60. The Student Princes shot 72% from the field (18-for-25) in the second half in sending Marietta to the defeat. Marietta sophomore Jesse DuPerow has been a big reason for the Pioneers' fast start. Last week, he recorded back-to-back double-doubles, with 18 points and 12 rebounds against Mount Union and 14 points and 12 rebounds against Heidelberg. DuPerow already has 15 career double-doubles.

Perhaps the week's single-best performance was by Wabash guard Josh Estelle. The senior poured in a career-high 40 points, including five 3-pointers and a perfect 15-for-15 from the line, but the Little Giants fell to Hanover 83-80 in double overtime in the finals of Wabash's own Pete Thorn Invitational. Estelle was named the tournament MVP.

Kalamazoo was the tough-luck team of the Thorn Invitational, losing both its games by one point -- 55-54 to Wabash and 73-72 to Elmhurst. The Hornets, who entered the weekend unbeaten at 3-0, got 28 points from Brad Phillips in a losing cause against Elmhurst in the consolation game.

Other top performances: Baldwin-Wallace freshman Shawn McCormick had 27 points, including 20 in the second half, on Saturday in the Yellowjackets' win over Capital, on the 50th anniversary of Ursprung Gymnasium.

Mount Union sophomore wing Kyle Schlabach had a career-high 25 points in a losing cause against Otterbein including six 3-pointers on nine attempts. Otterbein center Jason Dutcher set a school record and tied an OAC record by going a perfect 11-for-11 against Heidelberg for 24 points.
