Coming up just short
Tyson Papenfuss, posting up the much taller J.R. Moore, scored 14 points off the bench for Lewis and Clark.
Upset city hasn't been limited to just the low to mid-major Division I programs, as Division III schools have gotten into the act. Unranked Elizabethtown was the big winner of the day, improving to a program-best 7-0 with a 77-72 victory over Division II Millersville Wednesday night. Chad Piersol hit the tiebreaking three-pointer for the Blue Jays, and finished with a team-high 22 points.

Meanwhile, on the opposite coast, Lewis & Clark came within a hair of an upset against Division I Portland State, losing, 61-60 at the home of the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, the Rose Garden. The Pioneers fought back from 15 points down in the second half, to make a game of it, but came up just short. Tyson Papenfuss led the Pioneers with 14 points.

In III-on-III action, the WIAC had a pair of road winners, as No. 4 UW-Stevens Point won at UW-La Crosse, 72-61. No. 6 UW-Whitewater, which got a 14-spot jump in the polls after beating the Pointers at home last week, fell on the road to UW-Oshkosh, 80-74. There was an upset in the MIAC as Macalester moved to 3-0 in league play, edging No. 22 St Thomas, 72-70, on a last-second shot by reserve Jerry Kraus. Bethel knocked Carleton from the ranks of the unbeaten, winning 75-68 in overtime. More men's scores on the Scoreboard.

On the women's side Carthage scored another nifty upset, slipping past No. 14 Lake Forest, 68-61, just days after knocking off Calvin. No. 7 UW-Whitewater walloped UW-Oshkosh, 82-43. You can read more about the Warhawks in this week's upcoming Around the Nation column. No. 22 Capital lost the last of its three consecutive games against solid opponents, falling to Wilmington, 76-68.

A couple of schools used relatively low point totals to win defensive struggles. St. Olaf scored 45, but won by eight over Augsburg and Rose-Hulman managed only 38 points, but also won by eight, over Franklin, holding its opponent to 16 percent shooting from the field.

More of Wednesday's women's scores on the Scoreboard.
