WASHINGTON -- Catholic University's men improved to 17-3 and extended their winning streak to 12 games, defeating Marymount 95-64. The Cardinals, who remained a game ahead of Goucher at 10-0 in the CAC, scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back, leading by as many as 35 points in the second half.
Junior guard Jim McNiff scored a game-high 29 points for Catholic, shooting 7-for-10 from three-point range. Marymount (9-11, 6-4 CAC) lost for only the third time in nine games.
SALEM, Va.-- Roanoke centers Ramsey Hathaway and Alex Phillips led the Maroons to an upset victory over No. 18 Hampden-Sydney 79-62. A sophomore, Hathaway notched his first career double-double with 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while Phillips, a sophomore, netted a game-high 17 points.
The Tigers, ranked No. 2 in the South Region, started off strong, taking a 7-2 lead, before the Maroons muscled their way back into the game. A basket by sophomore center Jeremy Harris with 2:21 left in the first half gave Hampden-Sydney its final lead of the game, 28-26.
Tigers' sophomore guard T.J. Grimes was the only Hampden-Sydney player in double figures with 14 points. The Maroons improve to 10-9 on the season, 7-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Tigers fall to 17-4, 11-4 in the ODAC.
Katie Montague became Wooster's all-time leading scorer Saturday with 1,206 points, scoring 20 points in a 59-58 loss to Wittenberg. The junior forward passed Lisa Diment's mark of 1,202. Montague, who shot 6-for-13 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the line, currently leads the North Coast Athletic Conference in scoring with an average of 22 points per game.
The win gave Wittenberg a split in the season series with Wooster.
Moravian junior Jason Moran scored all 26 of his points in the second half Feb. 4 to pass the 1,000 point mark. Moran, 11th in rebounds and 14th in blocked shots in Division III, needed 25 points against Albright to reach the milestone.
Washington University guard Amy Schweizer scored a team-high 15 points and her final tally made the senior the Bears' all-time leading scorer in a 95-51 non-conference victory against MacMurray at the WU Field House. Schweizer, who scored two points in the first half, added 13 in the second stanza including the record-setting three-pointer from the top of the key with 9:38 remaining in the game.
Schweizer has 1,361 career points, passing WU Hall of Famer Karen Hermann, who scored 1,360 points from 1987-91.
"I am happy to set the record at home and have my name mentioned with some of the greatest players in Washington U. history," said Schweizer. "It is a great honor. More importantly, we won the game and continue our push for a run at the postseason."
Mike Rencher converted all eight of his shots from the field and scored 18 points to lead a balanced scoring attack and help visiting Hunter to a runaway 85-46 non-conference victory against Ramapo. Hunter won a school-record 16th consecutive game, breaking the previous mark of 15 set on three occasions, the last coming during the 1993-94 season.
Forward Braheen Cotton added 15 points and guards Stanley O'Neil and George Brown added 14 and 12, respectively. Hunter, ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region and No. 13 in the NABC poll, improved to 18-1 on the season.
Junior guard Henry Shannon scored 28 points and became Maryville's career scoring leader as the Saints (11-7, 7-1) defeated Westminster (4-13, 4-4) 83-67. He finished the game with 1,563 points, five more than the previous record held by Lloyd McClain.
The nationally ranked Flying Dutchmen extended their winning streak to 18 games Jan. 31 with a hard fought 85-79 MIAA victory against Olivet. For the second time this season, the Flying Dutchmen built a big halftime lead only to have Olivet rally in the second half to make a game of it.
On Saturday the Flying Dutchmen led 51-34 at halftime. Hope's lead was 11 points with three minutes to play, but Olivet was able to trim it to four points with just less than a minute to play. Hope used free throws to hold off the Comets to improve to 18-1 on the season and to 7-0 in the MIAA men's basketball standings.
The Flying Dutchmen were playing without leading scorer David Meulenberg who was sidelined with a leg injury suffered Jan. 30 in practice. Meulenberg missed the 1995-96 season with a similar injury. His status for the rest of this season is undetermined.
Five Hope players scored in double figures for the Flying Dutchmen led by senior Kris Merritt with 18 points. He also blocked five shots. Senior Dan Hekken added 16 points, including 8-for-8 on free throws, followed by Joel Holstege with 15.
Forward Phil Robinson led six players in double figures with 15 points as Springfield ran its winning streak to seven games with an easy 96-72 victory against city rival Western New England on Saturday at Blake Arena. The Pride improves its record to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in the Constitution Athletic Conference.
Center Benjamin Otis added 13 points and 9 rebounds. Guards Tom Keane and Ken Payette led the Golden Bears (1-15, 0-7) with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Springfield visits Coast Guard (10-7, 7-2) in an important CAC game Monday night in New London, Connecticut.
Catholic University routed Gallaudet 79-58 to send the Bison to their second consecutive Capital Athletic Conference loss and second overall in three games. The Bison, ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic Region, fell to 15-3 after losing at York 84-81 and Catholic.
Catholic (6-10, 2-6) was led by senior center Katie Pogge's 21 points and 10 rebounds and held preseason All-America center Ronda Miller to 19 points and tied for a career-low eight rebounds.
Meanwhile, Catholic's men won their 10th straight, beating Gallaudet 90-62 to clinch the best start in the program's 86-year history at 15-3.
