High five keep falling
UW-Eau Claire led from tip to finish against UW-Whitewater and the Blugolds sent the No. 4 Warhawks to defeat, 80-67. Amadou Fofana and Geoff Probst led the charge early for UW-Eau Claire, whose lead hovered at or above 10 points for much of the first half. Dustin Mitchell scored five straight points to pull the Warhawks within two but the Blugolds answered with a 13-5 run to pull away. The Warhawks are the fourth team ranked in the Top 5 to lose this week.

The one that didn't lose? No. 2 UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers got all they could handle at UW-Superior but pulled out the 56-53 victory. No. 6 Guilford avenged its only loss of the season by beating No. 8 Virginia Wesleyan 71-56 at home. Tyler Sanborn posted a double-double (21 points, 15 rebounds) for the 10th consecutive game and Quakers improved to 14-1, 5-1 ODAC. Saturday's men's scores. For women's coverage, scroll down.

William Paterson started the day with a big win over defending NJAC champion Richard Stockton, 63-57. The Pioneers hadn't beaten the Ospreys since December 2004 but broke the jinx when Joseph Ellis drained a late three to lift William Paterson to its 13th consecutive win. No. 14 Anderson notched its 12th consecutive win by topping Hanover 74-70.

Marietta got 38 points combined from sophomores Kevin Knab and Trevor Halter to upset No. 15 Wilmington 74-57. No. 9 MIT survived an upset bid at the hands of Clark, getting 17 points from Noel Hollingsworth in a 54-51 win. No. 18 Eastern Mennonite pulled away from Randolph at the foul line down the stretch, winning 86-74 to remain unbeaten against Division III foes. No. 12 St. Norbert held Grinnell to 72 points, its best defensive effort against Grinnell since 1993, in a 109-72 victory. Sophomore center Tommy Hannon scored six of his career-high 14 points in overtime as fifth-ranked St. Thomas survived against archrival St. John's, 70-69.

Carthage beat Augustana 69-64 to pick up a big conference victory on the road. The Red Men share second place in the CCIW with an unlikely team: North Park. The Vikings edged Wheaton (Ill.) 75-73 in overtime behind Roshawn Russell's 22 points and improved to 3-1 in conference.

Catholic slowed Merchant Marine's cruise through the Landmark Conference with a 72-70 victory at home. The Mariners had three chances to tie or win the game late but could not convert. Rochester defeated St. John Fisher 60-54 in the finals of the Wendy's Classic, which was formerly called the JP Morgan Chase Tournament. B.J. Smith drilled a three pointer as time expired to give Widener a dramatic 66-65 win against Lebanon Valley. Troy Talbot's runner with one second left lifted Oneonta State over Buffalo State 76-74 and to the Red Dragons' best start since 1997.

Eagles ground Saints
Mary Washington stymied No. 5 Marymount in the first half and held on through the second to give Saints their first loss of the season, 65-57. The Eagles scored the first 20 points of the game while holding the Saints to only four first-half field goals and no points until midway through the first half. The Saints' offense improved in the second half but they could get no closer than six. The Eagles improved to 11-3 and 6-0 in the CAC and Marymount slips to 15-1 and 6-1 in conference.

With three ranked teams and a couple other dangerous contenders, the NESCAC race is shaping up to be a good one. After No. 11 Tufts was upended by Williams on Friday night, it was No. 8 Bowdoin's turn on Saturday. The Polar Bears shot just 3-for-8 from the free-throw line at home and lost to CBB rival Colby 64-56 in the teams' NESCAC opener. Colby is 11-1, off to the best start in program history. No. 2 Amherst stayed above the fray by blasting Connecticut College 91-35. The Lord Jeffs have nine wins by at least 30 points. Saturday's women's schedule.

UW-Eau Claire lost its first three games of the season and had another six game losing streak to close 2009. But the Blugolds have turned the page on their cold start and fought their way into the WIAC race. They are just one game out of first after beating visiting No. 15 UW-Whitewater 57-53. UW-Eau Claire is 28-1 against the Warhawks at home since 1988. No. 18 UW-River Falls beat UW-Platteville 88-59 to end its two-game losing streak and stay in first place.

No. 15 William Paterson rallied from 11 down in the second half to beat Richard Stockton 77-73. Mary Hardin-Baylor pulled itself into a tie for first place in the ASC West by preserving a victory at home against No. 23 Howard Payne, 63-59. The Crusaders and Yellow Jackets are both 8-3 in conference.

Outside the Top 25 and off the radar, undefeated Farmingdale State made a statement by beating perennial conference favorite Mount St. Mary 72-59. Kimberly Blakney scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Rams' in the victory. Amanda Kania tallied 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead Plymouth State over Rhode Island College 74-72 in overtime. Tanisha Carter hit two free-throws with three seconds left to push Eastern Connecticut past Southern Maine, 54-52.

Rochester defeated NAIA Roberts Wesleyan 68-51 to win the Wendy's Classic, which was previously known as the JP Morgan Chase Tournament. Wittenberg edged Ohio Wesleyan 83-80 in a match-up of teams that were previously unbeaten in the NCAC. Texas Lutheran nipped Hardin-Simmons 80-79 in overtime, giving the Bulldogs their first conference victory over the Cowgirls in 17 tries.
