No. 24 Carthage knocked No. 3 Hope from the ranks of the unbeaten with a strong defensive effort in a 51-47 victory at Oglethorpe on Monday. The Flying Dutch played without preseason All American Carrie Snikkers who is out with a foot injury for an undetermined period of time.
Both teams struggled from the floor, particularly in the first half when Hope shot 18 percent (6 for 34) and Carthage 21 percent (6 for 29). Hope led 43-37 with less than five minutes to play but only scored four points the rest of the way. The Lady Reds converted their free throws down the stretch and survived two game-tying three point attempts. “I need to make sure we’re not too giddy tonight about winning this game and ready to come back and play tomorrow,” said Carthage coach Tim Bernero. “This win was an upset, but it was no fluke. We’re pretty good, and we should get a little bit more notice now.” The Lady Reds (9-1) face tournament host Oglethorpe who defeated Piedmont 65-56. More
