The 19th Pool C bid will come one year late for Augustana. However, the Vikings are 6-2 overall, 6-1 in-region, so they could contend this year.

NCAA field increases to 61 for men
The men's and women's Division III NCAA Tournament fields will each have one more at-large bid and the men's tournament field size increases from 60 to 61 teams this season as the NCAA released the field breakdown for the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

The women's tournament is already at its feasible maximum of 64 teams, having expanded last year. The men's tournament increases from 60 to 61 teams, as more programs become eligible for the NCAA Tournament. There is one spot in the NCAA Tournament set aside for every 6.5 schools that sponsor the sport.

In the men's tournament, 40 conferences receive automatic bids, with the Landmark Conference having completed its two-year waiting period. Two bids, known as Pool B bids, are set aside for teams that are not in one of those 40 conferences, such as independents, or members of the Great South, New England Collegiate and Upper Midwest Athletic Conferences. The remaining 19 bids are true at-large selections, known as Pool C bids. That's an increase of one spot from last year.

There are 41 conferences that receive automatic bids (sometimes known as automatic qualifiers, or AQs) to the women's tournament. The Great South Athletic Conference has more than the required seven women's programs and receives an automatic bid. There are two Pool B bids and 21 Pool C bids, again an increase of one over the 2009 tournament field.

Vikings right the ship
A two-game losing streak is modest in any circumstances and even more so when it comes against Division I power Gonzaga and the two-time defending Division III champs Washington U. But No. 18 Augustana halted that streak and improved to 6-2 in region by beating No. 24 Chicago, 59-47.

The Vikings never trailed after jumping out to an early 8-2 lead. Chicago cut the deficit to one a couple times in the first half but Augustana pushed the lead back to six at the half and built it as high as 19 in the second half. The Vikings held the Maroons to 17 field goals and benefited from 28 Chicago turnovers.

No. 3 UW-Whitewater reached the double-digit mark for victories by rolling Carroll 88-62. Dustin Mitchell paced the Warhawks with 20 points and 11 rebounds and Jeff Hoch scored 24 points for the Pioneers. UW-Whitewater's next game will be against Augustana next Tuesday. No. 6 Guilford cruised at home over Maryville (Tenn.) 82-53 behind Tyler Sanborn's 20 points and 17 rebounds. Wednesday's men's scores.

In women’s action, Maryville (Tenn.) topped Greensboro 71-61 in a meeting of South Region conference champions from a year ago. Paige Sever led the Scots with 15 points and six rebounds while Bianca Richburg notched 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Pride. No. 9 Marymount enjoyed some fun in the sun with a 66-58 victory over Adrian in the Cruzin' Classic in Fort Lauderdale. Case Western made it seven in a row by beating Hiram 85-56. Wednesday's women's scores.
