Muhlenberg men's coach retires
The winningest coach in Muhlenberg College athletic history, Dave Madeira has announced his retirement.

Madeira compiled a career record of 311-247 in 22 seasons as head men’s basketball coach. He surpassed current athletic director and former baseball coach Sam Beidleman on the school’s all-time list with his 256th win on Jan. 15, 2005, at McDaniel. Madeira’s 300th win came against Hood on Jan. 3, 2009, and his final win was a 52-50 victory against Haverford in the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs on Feb. 25 -- part of a 16-11 season for the Mules.

“God has blessed my wife and I with 22 years of employment as the head coach of basketball at Muhlenberg College. I’ve worked with tremendous support from our administration, faculty, assistant coaches and of course the players,” said Madeira.

“We are moving on to another phase of our lives where we will move closer to our son, daughter-in-law and five grandchildren. We are very thankful to have had this opportunity at Muhlenberg and will be Mules the rest of our lives.”

Under Madeira’s coaching, Muhlenberg won two Centennial Conference championships and won or shared CC East Division titles in eight of the 10 years in which the CC had divisions. The Mules received bids to the Division III NCAA Tournament in both 1995 and 1998.

Madeira led the Mules to double digits in wins in each of his first 16 seasons. His team qualified for conference playoffs 13 times and conference playoff tiebreakers on two other occasions.

Including his five years as an assistant coach before becoming head coach, Madeira was on the bench for 402 Muhlenberg wins.

Before coming to Muhlenberg, the 62-year-old Madeira piloted the highly successful basketball program at Lakeland High School, Lackawanna County, from 1974 to 1981, where he earned a District II PIAA championship in 1977. Madeira was an assistant for four years at Abington High School, Montgomery County (Pa.), and for one year at Melbourne (Fla.) High School.

Madeira is a 1969 graduate of Concord College in Athens, W.Va., where he played varsity football and baseball. He earned his master’s degree in physical education from West Chester University.

“Dave has had a long and distinguished career at Muhlenberg,” said Beidleman. “His impact on the hundreds of young men he coached goes far beyond the basketball court. I’m sure I speak for the entire College community in wishing him a long and healthy retirement.”

Muhlenberg will conduct an immediate search for a replacement.

NCAA adds sectional video coverage
The NCAA has done its own video broadcasts from the Final Four the past two seasons and D3hoops.com has been glad to partner with NCAA.com to provide broadcasters for those games.

This year, the video is coming one weekend earlier. The NCAA is putting video crews at four of the sectional sites, and there will be audio coverage everywhere else as we will be on site at all eight sectionals on Saturday and seven of them on Friday.

The Bracket of Death comes to its conclusion on NCAA.com video from Wheaton (Ill.), as No. 1 St. Thomas, No. 2 Washington U., No. 3 Wheaton and No. 7 Puget Sound converge on Friday night. Pat Coleman and Bob Quillman will be on the call.

Richard Stockton will host the other men's video production, as Frank Rossi and Chris Pesotski call games with Bridgewater State, Farmingdale State, St. Lawrence and Richard Stockton.

Viewing the games, and all NCAA Tournament games, is free of charge.

The women's sectionals covered are at Amherst, where Mark Simon and Scott Sudikoff are on the call for games between Amherst, NYU, Muhlenberg and Brandeis, and at Rochester, where John McGraw has the games between Scranton, York (Pa.), TCNJ and Rochester.

You'll be able to find links to the broadcasts, as well as our audio broadcasts of the other sectionals, on our Broadcast page.

Adrian coach retires after 27 years
Longtime Adrian head men's basketball coach Buck Riley announced he is retiring after 27 years at the helm of the program. This season, the Bulldogs compiled an 8-17 record and finished tied for fifth in the MIAA. Riley had a career 294-401 record.

"It has been a privilege coaching men's basketball at Adrian College," said Riley. "I have benefited greatly from having support of the administration, faculty and staff. The most gratifying part of my journey has been working with my players and assistant coaches and sustaining lasting relationships."

Riley's teams reached the MIAA Tournament finals twice this decade in 2001 and 2005. Riley also coached 19 First Team All-MIAA selections and six conference scoring champions in his career. A total of 15 players have scored 1,000 points during his tenure including Desmond Young, who just finished his career at Adrian as a three-time All-MIAA First Team honoree.

"Buck Riley has meant the world to Adrian College as not only a fine coach but a finer individual off the court," said athletic director Mike Duffy. "He embodies the spirit of Adrian College and has been a great steward in the Adrian community. It has been a pleasure to work beside him over the past 27 years."

Riley goes down in the MIAA record books with the eighth-most wins by a men's basketball coach and had the fifth-longest tenure in the 100-year history of the conference. His best seasons were in 1985-86 and 2003-04 when the team won 16 games.

Jimmy Bartolotta, left, and Melanie Auguste, right, are 2009's Jostens Trophy winners.
Jostens winners from MIT, CC
Jimmy Bartolotta and Melanie Auguste have been named winners of the 2009 Jostens Trophy, as originally reported by D3hoops.com.

In voting concluded before the beginning of the NCAA Tournament, Bartolotta, a senior guard for MIT, and Auguste, a senior guard at Colorado College, were the top men's and women's vote-getter among 10 finalists. Voters ranked each of the 10 finalists from top to bottom, and finalists were evaluated based on basketball ability, academics and community service.

Bartolotta averaged 27.6 points this season in leading the Engineers to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing with 2,279 career points. The 2009 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year carries a 4.6 grade-point average (on MIT's 5.0-point scale), with a double major in management science and physics. He has interned at Lockheed Martin as well as organized youth T-ball and mentored middle school children in the Cambridge, Mass., area.

Auguste was the first player in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference history to lead the league in scoring (20.2 points per game) and assists (7.1). She finished her career as the program's all-time leader with 607 assists and 243 steals. She also ranks No. 3 with 1,572 points and 100 three-point baskets, and is No. 4 with 815 rebounds. Auguste has a 3.74 GPA in economics and is a nominee for a Rhodes Scholarship. She takes part in Habitat for Humanity at Colorado College and was a founding editor of a student-run academic journal called the Rocky Mountain Undergraduate Review.

Bartolotta and Auguste will receive their awards at a ceremony in Salem, Va., on Thursday, March 19. It's the 12th year the award has been presented to the top all-around student-athlete in Division III men's and women's basketball.
