Death comes for the WIAC
Saturday night was not a night to be coming off a bye, or to be from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Ithaca went down at home 77-71 to DeSales, as Darnell Braswell scored 27 and had 13 rebounds. Photo gallery.

Minutes later Stace Garrick hit two long three-pointers in the final 37 seconds to lift Bridgewater State past Middlebury 78-76. The Panthers hit just 11 of 26 free throws in the loss. Saturday's men's scores. For women's coverage, scroll down.

The teams that played that Thursday night game got two big upsets on Saturday. Trinity (Texas) wasn't able to join them, however, as No. 22 UT-Dallas won at No. 17 Trinity 70-54. Whitworth fell as well, 84-72 at bye team Puget Sound as Jason Foster scored 27 points, including 15-for-16 free-throw shooting.

The Bracket of Death claimed all three WIAC teams, but not without three battles. Top-ranked St. Thomas ended No. 4 UW-Stevens Point's season 53-50 (Photo gallery), No. 3 Wheaton (Ill.) edged No. 5 UW-Platteville 74-69 in overtime and No. 2 Washington U. beat No. 8 UW-Whitewater 73-70.

Both OAC teams advanced to the Sweet 16, on the back of last-second shots. Chris Zajac drilled a 19-footer with less than one second left 76-74, while Capital got a one-handed bank shot on a runner from sophomore D.J. Frazier to survive Wooster, 72-70. They'll face Guilford and Texas-Dallas, respectively.

Franklin and Marshall advanced to the Sweet 16, holding off Brandeis, which closed the game on an 11-1 run but needed 13, falling 65-63. The Diplomats will play short-handed Salem State, which joined its MASCAC rival Bridgewater State in the Sweet 16 by edging Widener 69-67. Salem State used just seven players this weekend after a handful of players were injured in a car accident. Photo gallery. Jimmy Bartolotta and Damien Santana combined for the game's first 18 points, but it was Santana's Farmingdale State team that came out on top, beating MIT 67-61.

How sweet it is
Hillary Klimowicz poured in 59 points this weekend in two big TCNJ victories.

The 2009 women’s basketball tournament is narrowed down to 16 teams and a quarter of them are from the UAA. No. 6 Washington U., 8 Rochester, No. 14 NYU and Brandeis all advanced through Saturday’s regional finals.

On a night when most ranked teams won (provided they didn’t play each other), TCNJ knocked off another Top 25 opponent. Hillary Klimowicz scored 28 points to give her 59 for the weekend and the Lions topped No. 16 Tufts, 57-55. Photo gallery. TCNJ will face No. 8 Rochester who erased a nine-point second half deficit and eliminated Kean, 66-59. Melissa Alwardt scored 25 points for the Yellowjackets. Saturday's women's scores.

If No. 1 Illinois Wesleyan is going to keep advancing, it is going to make a lot of WIAC fans unhappy. The Titans eliminated No. 9 UW-Eau Claire 80-63 by holding the Blugolds scoreless for a stretch of nearly five minutes in the second half. No. 4 UW-Stevens Point waits in the sectional finals after cruising past Concordia (Wis.) 78-58.

No. 18 Muhlenberg has a long but happy drive home from Maine after edging No. 21 Bowdoin 58-57. The Mules took the lead before the half and never relinquished it, though they had to survive an Alexa Kaubris jump shot as time expired to advance. Next up is Brandeis who led Mount St. Mary wire-to-wire in a 79-52 victory. The Judges advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time ever.

One night after last year's champion Howard Payne was eliminated, two more teams from last year's final four also lost. No. 7 Thomas More outrebounded No. 15 Messiah 40-18 and bounced the Falcons, 57-50. St. Benedict finished off No. 10 UW-Whitewater 69-57, denying the Warhawks another trip to the sectionals. No. 5 Oglethorpe is the only national semifinalist left. The Stormy Petrels handled No. 23 Greensboro 67-40. No. 3 George Fox doubled up Chapman 83-40 to set up a Top 5 showdown with Oglethorpe.

NCAA Tournament newbie York (Pa.) will keep dancing after ousting Baruch, 90-73. All five Spartan starters scored double-digits led by April Sparkman's 17 points and seven rebounds. York (Pa.) will draw a tournament veteran next in No. 20 Scranton. The Lady Royals defeated Cortland State 51-45 for their 18th straight win.
