HSC coach heads to Sewanee Bubba Smith has been named head men's coach at Sewanee, the school announced today. Smith, who led Hampden-Sydney to the NCAA Tournament twice in five seasons as head coach, is returning to Tennessee, where he played his high school basketball.
"There is no question that Sewanee is special, and I hope to build upon the success that has been a part of Sewanee’s past, as we look forward to growing the men's basketball program," Smith said. "I'm passionate about attracting young men to Sewanee who have a commitment to excellence in their academic, athletic, social, and personal growth.
"The successes our players (at Hampden-Sydney) have had on the court have been equally as impressive as their accomplishments off, and I envision the same for our student-athletes at Sewanee."
Smith compiled a 94-46 (.671) record including two ODAC championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. During his three years as an assistant coach, Smith assisted Tony Shaver as the duo led the Tigers to 75 wins, two ODAC titles and an appearance in the 2003 NCAA Division III Final Four.
As a player, Smith was a four-year letterman at Furman from 1995-99. He was also the team captain for the 1998-99 season. |

| | Rosemont to admit men On May 30, Rosemont's board of trustees of approved a strategic plan which includes admitting undergraduate men for the first time in the fall of 2009.
The unanimous vote by the board, of which 38 percent are alumni and 25 percent are members of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, the college's sponsoring religious congregation, comes after more than 15 months of study, research, discussion, and deliberation.
"At the beginning of this process, and in many cases throughout the process, the majority of those involved did not want Rosemont to become co-ed at the undergraduate level, myself included, though we have been co-ed at the graduate level and in our professional studies programs for more than 20 years," said chair Ron Remick. "We all have been great proponents of the Undergraduate Women's College and we know, understand, and value the merits of an all-women's education; however, through our analysis, research, and evaluation we learned that Rosemont cannot continue to be viable as a Catholic single-sex college at the undergraduate level."
Rosemont is a member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference, which becomes the Colonial States Athletic Conference on July 1. Athletics was not specifically mentioned in the school's release, but the school would likely join other formerly all-women's institutions such as Hood, Regis, Randolph, Immaculata and Wells in adding men's athletics. Basketball could come as soon as 2009-10 but is more likely in 2010-11. |

Tony Ciccone spent four years as an assistant at Emory. Photo by Pat Coleman, D3sports.com |
Emory assistant moves across town Actually, it's not even all the way across Atlanta for Tony Ciccone, as the Emory assistant takes over as head coach at Agnes Scott. Ciccone replaces Alex Stewart, who was 17-9 in her only season as head coach before returning to Georgia Tech, her alma mater, as assistant director of basketball operations.
"We are excited about the addition of Tony Ciccone to our staff," Akin said. "Tony has been very successful over the past four years heading up the recruiting and the resurgence of Emory women's basketball. He will bring new ideas and insights in recruiting."
In 2007-08, Emory concluded the year with an overall slate of 14-11 which included a 7-7 mark in University Athletic Association contests, the best record for the Eagles in league action since 1998-1999. In addition, Ciccone helped Emory to victories over a total of eight Top 25-ranked programs including three during 2007-08. He also coached a total of five players to All-University Athletic Association first or second-team berths.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to lead the Agnes Scott College women’s basketball program,” Ciccone said. “It is a privilege to be a part of the Scottie family and I am excited to lead the program into the future.”
Prior to arriving at Emory, Ciccone spent one year (2003-04) at Stevens, as the assistant women's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator. Ciccone helped the Ducks secure an Eastern College Athletic Conference postseason tournament bid during that season. He also played a major role in recruiting one of the most successful classes in school history. |
