Anti-D-IV 'vote' was landslide
More than four-fifths of current Division III members supports or strongly supported the current Division III structure, according to survey results released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

The survey, which 96 percent of Division III schools responded to, overwhelmingly rejected the idea floated by some of creating a Division IV, or subdividing Division III into a III-A and III-AA. Only eight percent of respondents supported the subdivisions, and nine percent the addition of a new division. In total, 65 schools indicated support or strong support for a change in Division III's structure.

Of those that expressed a desire to maintain the current structure, about half gave reasons, according to the NCAA's survey summary. The most common reasons included the negative impacts, such as breaking up of conferences, the loss of traditional rivalries, and difficulties attracting student-athletes to a Division IV school.

Division III members have made changes in recent years as the division has grown in size, trying to find more common ground among institutions. The elimination of redshirting was put into place several years ago, and votes were taken regarding offseason practice (the so-called non-traditional season) for fall and spring sports, as well as the length of the playing season and number of contests played. The survey showed a great deal of common ground among current members.

Only 5.7 percent of respondents favored shortening the playing season from its current length: 19 weeks for winter and spring sports and 18 weeks for fall sports. Eighty-one percent of respondents favored maintaining its current length, with 13 percent in support of lengthening it. The agreement was even stronger in terms of the number of contests played in each season, with 86.5 percent hoping to maintain the status quo.

The decision to eliminate redshirting received continued support, with 56.4 percent agreeing or strongly agreeing to the current definition of participation. A little over 26 percent disagreed, or strongly disagreed.
