Madness underway Trinity (Texas) jumped out to an early lead on McMurry in the first Division III NCAA Tournament game of the season, but McMurry took over late in the first half, extended its lead to as many as 15 points in the second half and held on down the stretch to win 71-67.
McMurry, the No. 12 team in the D3hoops.com Top 25, advances to play at No. 2 Howard Payne on Saturday.
The Tigers scored 16 of the first 20 points, but McMurry answered with 33 of the next 51 to take a 37-34 lead into the locker room. McMurry extended its lead to 47-34 early in the second half, then went out to as many as a 15-point lead on an Erica Peters jumper with 6:55 left. Trinity cut the lead to two with a 17-4 run capped by a Prato Matthews jumper with 44 seconds left. However, Tarra Richardson blocked a shot, the 300th of her career, and Amber Horton hit a pair of free throws with four seconds left to seal the victory.
Richardson led all scorers with 30 points and added her 1,000th rebound as well.
Will defending champion DePauw repeat? Who has the best chance to be the Cinderella story of each of the four brackets? Which high-"seeded" team is in the best position to disappoint? And who will eventually cut the nets down and get the free trip to Holland, Mich.?
We predict all in our annual Division III women's tournament preview.
Don't forget to join the Pick'em contest, with the men's deadline tomorrow. Men's bracket and women's bracket. |

| | WNEC coach to concentrate on AD job After four seasons, Western New England men's coach Mike Theulen is stepping down. He will remain as the school’s director of athletics. Chris Agoglia, an assistant coach with the Golden Bears the last four years, will replace Theulen as the head coach.
Theulen, one of the most popular and successful coaches in the Northeast, compiled a 70-42 record for a 62.5 winning percentage during his tenure with the Golden Bears, including a 16-11 mark this past season. This winter his team tied for third place in its first season in The Commonwealth Coast Conference and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Last year Theulen directed the Golden Bears to a 22-8 record, which was the second highest win total in team history. His squad also captured the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Tournament title for the program’s first-ever postseason championship.
Theulen, who is in his 10th year as athletic director, previously served as the men’s basketball coach at Springfield posting a 132-83 record (61.4%) from 1990-98. His overall men’s basketball record stands at 202-125 (61.8%). Theulen gained his 200th all-time victory on Feb. 12 against Regis (Mass.). Theulen also coached the SC women’s basketball team for three years (1983-86) compiling a 41-33 mark (55.4%).
“It has been a privilege to serve as the college’s men’s basketball coach the last four seasons,” Theulen stated. “However, the demands of my administrative position have increased dramatically, particularly over the past year with a new conference affiliation, the success of our teams, and in the fundraising area. The basketball program deserves full-time attention from its coach and the athletics department deserves full-time attention from its athletics director.
“I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the players for their efforts and for all the support given me by my administrative staff, the coaching staff, and all of our student-athletes,” he added. “Without their support, this wouldn’t have been possible. It is indeed a great time to be at Western New England College and to be part of this athletics family. The future continues to look very bright.”
Agoglia, a native of Brockton, Mass., graduated from Springfield with a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management in 1998 and master’s degree in Athletic Administration in 2000. He was a four-year member of the Pride men’s basketball team, playing three seasons for Theulen.
A two-year starter at guard, Agoglia scored 620 points in 88 games (7.0 avg.) and was one of the team’s best three-pointer shooters. He ranks sixth on the school’s all-time list in that category (120). Agoglia averaged 8.5 points on the 1997-98 squad coached by Theulen, which posted a 26-2 record for the best mark in school history.
“Chris Agoglia has all the attributes to be a successful basketball coach at the College level. He has a passion for the game, is highly intelligent, knows how to teach, and communicates very well with our players,” said Theulen.
Also, Bill Downes retired as an assistant coach, but will remain with the college as its men’s golf coach. |

| | Lynchburg coach resigns at 32-96 John Swickrath, head men's basketball coach at Lynchburg, announced his resignation Wednesday.
Swickrath, promoted to guide the program for the 2003-04 season after one year as an assistant at LC, was one of the youngest head coaches ever at the Division III level.
In 2003-04, Swickrath led the Hornet program to its most wins since the 1996-97 season, and also defeated ODAC rival Roanoke for the first time in 18 years. The young mentor also led LC to a 54-50 ODAC Tournament defeat of No. 1 seeded Randolph-Macon - the first No. 8 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in conference tournament history, spanning 24 years. The 2004-05 squad almost repeated the huge ODAC Tournament upset, losing to top-seeded Randolph-Macon in overtime. He posted a record of 32-96 in his five seasons as head coach.
"We wish John the best of luck in his future endeavors," said Jack Toms, Lynchburg director of athletics. "We appreciate what he has done for the basketball program and athletic department the last six years. I'm sure he will succeed wherever he decides to go from here."
A nation-wide search will begin immediately to fill the opening. "It has been a very enjoyable experience the last six years at LC," said Swickrath. "The coaches and staff members have been great to work with and have taught me an immense amount of information about coaching. I leave knowing we worked hard as a staff and did many positive things for our players and community." |
