If going only by the numbers, the Division III men's tournament could have a distinct west coast bias. Cal Lutheran photo by Scott Chisholm |
Picking the field of 59 It's not clear we ever have a lot of faith or confidence in our own projections, but this may be a completely new era of shaken faith.
This year we have a brand-new NCAA selection criterion, in terms of the new strength of schedule calculations. We've never seen them put into practice. Never watched multiple teams from multiple regions picked and tracked the math backwards.
When the numbers told us we needed to take a fourth NESCAC school, we weren't overly surprised. The NESCAC once got three teams into the 48-team field, after all. But when the numbers told us we needed to take a third SCIAC team, well ... all bets were off.
Our projected Field of 59.

Howard Payne got the one bye in the women's bracket. McMurry file photo by Kyle Robarts |
Women's bracket is a doozy Howard Payne got the sole bye in the Division III women's basketball bracket and awaits the winner of McMurry and Trinity (Texas), in the one Wednesday first-round game.
The women's bracket once again features a strong national distribution, with top seeds dispersed as much as possible throughout the bracket. There appear to be eight teams the committee protected through their placement in the bracket: Messiah, Mary Washington, Kean, Thomas More, Howard Payne, Hope, Simpson and DePauw.
We announced the bracket this morning but if you missed it, there was a note: Scranton will be hosting the four-team pod that includes Eastern Connecticut, Rochester and Medaille. Also, a later update: Bridgewater State will now be hosting the pod that includes Bowdoin, Amherst and Becker.
Now, if only the men could also come up with a sectional bracket that features Texas, the West Coast, Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic.
Thanks to the 2,500-plus people who tuned in to our broadcast of the women's bracket announcement! Women's game times are not predetermined by the NCAA, so when we get information from the schools we will post it on our bracket. |

Kent Raymond's career isn't over, it turns out. |
Surprise: Wheaton men in The Division III men's basketball tournament bracket has been released, with the Field of 59 set along the road to Salem. Download the newly created printable version of the bracket.
D3hoops.com predicted 16 of 17 Pool C teams and three of four Pool B teams. Wheaton (Ill.) was in, while Cal Lutheran was out in Pool C. Moravian was in and Chapman was not selected in Pool B. Thunder coach Bill Harris said: “I am surprised that we were selected. I don’t know how Lazarus felt, but it may have been something like this.
“I am pleased that we were selected. We played a tough schedule and have some wins over teams that are in the tournament like University of Chicago, Loras and Augustana; I am sure that those victories helped us.”
As a reminder, if you didn't hear it on the show, the NCAA production was in error on one of the first-round matchups. Contrary to what the NCAA announced, Occidental does not get a first-round bye -- the Tigers host Pomona-Pitzer, with the winner traveling to Whitworth in the second round.
UW-Platteville was on the bubble and ended up not making the field. The Pioneers, however, return basically everyone in 2009. Four NESCAC teams make the field, along with four UAA teams. Scroll down for the women's bracket info.
Plus, who will the new men's No. 1 team be? We'll found out later tonight, if there even is one. |
