Saints turn over Herons' streak
St. Lawrence forced a season-high 22 turnovers and ended William Smith's 15-game winning streak as the Saints defeated the Herons 71-55. Jamie Wolff scored a game-high 22 points and three St. Lawrence players outscored William Smith's high scorer as the No. 14 Herons lost for the first time since Dec. 4 against Rochester.

Rochester lost its third consecutive game, as Jamie Capra scored 19 points, 15 of them in the second half for Brandeis, which won 71-64. Friday night's women's scores.

The Brandeis men finished the sweep, beating Rochester 68-64 behind 20 points from Kevin Olson. The game featured seven ties and 11 lead changes as the No. 10 Judges split the season series with the No. 6 Yellowjackets. And Washington U. did it again -- scoring the last eight points of the game in the final 92 seconds to win on the road, this time beating Case Western Reserve 71-68. Wash U scored the last nine points in 99 seconds to win at Brandeis on Jan. 27 as well. Friday night's men's scores.

No. 21 Tufts won its program-best 20th game, beating Bowdoin 83-56. Khalilah Ummah, Jenna Gomez and Katie Tausanovitch combined for 55 points on 25-for-36 shooting as the Jumbos beat the Polar Bears for the first time since December 1994. It left the NESCAC women's standings in a three-way tie, with Amherst, Bowdoin and Tufts at 6-2 apiece.

It wasn't a good night to be a Northwest Conference leader, as Whitman beat No. 16 Puget Sound, ending the Loggers' 10-game winning streak, while No. 12 George Fox lost as well, 45-35 at Lewis and Clark. The two remain tied for first. It was George Fox's first loss to the Pioneers since 1994.

The old guard always graduates, to be replaced by new guards, such as Wittenberg's Derrick Hannon.
Rivalry gets its next generation
Other than Hope/Calvin and Amherst/Williams, rivalries grow and fade in intensity as the years go by. Players graduate. (This is Division III, after all.) Fans graduate. Even coaches tend to move on eventually.

So, in order to keep the fires lit, a rivalry has to be passed on to future generations. A Dan Russ or a Tom Port can't stick around forever. With Wooster and Wittenberg taking the floor again on Saturday, D3hoops.com's Matt Florjancic took a look at two of the rivalry's freshmen: Wooster's Bryan Wickliffe and Wittenberg's Derrick Hannon.

How did they get adjusted to college-level basketball, let alone get indoctrinated into the rivalry? Read more in a D3hoops.com feature story.

Plus, scroll down for Around the Nation and more about the weekend's top games, as well as a look at how Ursinus has so far avoided last season's stretch-run struggles.

Tonight, the rematch between No. 6 Rochester and No. 10 Brandeis highlights the men's side, while No. 21 Tufts and Bowdoin battle for a share of first place in the NESCAC on the women's side. Friday's men's and women's schedule.
