The Division III men's basketball committee made its second course correction of the past week when it told participating institutions late this morning that it was changing the bracket.
Instead of ASC teams Mary Hardin-Baylor and Mississippi College playing each other in the first round, Mississippi College will play Occidental and UMHB will play Maryville (Tenn.).
Here's the new brackets:
men and
women. And now
the Pick 'Em contest is open, let's get started!
And here's a sneak peek at what a power rating, an RPI-style ranking, could look like in Division III. The
men's ranking thinks UW-La Crosse is the No. 15 team in Division III, puts UW-Oshkosh at No. 19 and Elmhurst at 23. The
women's ranking has Howard Payne down at No. 25 thanks to opponents' opponents' winning percentage, a bad sign considering that is a stat which will be considered next year.
Meanwhile, if you turned in early last night or don't have Internet access at home, a refresher on what happened Sunday, another record-setting day of traffic at D3hoops.com. The bubble popped for two men's teams early in the day when Amherst and WPI lost their conference finals, and the women's bubble got one team smaller late in the day when Dickinson lost in the Centennial finals.
The women's committee has earned itself some fans in Texas, splitting up the two ASC teams. Hope and Calvin wouldn't meet until the Elite Eight, if they advance.
Although the men's bracket avoided the cliche SCIAC-vs-NWC matchup in the first round, they originally created an ASC rematch in the first round where Mississippi College could have played Maryville (Tenn.) instead.
