Fisk pulls out of GSAC
Fisk has withdrawn its membership from the Great South Athletic
Conference effective immediately. Fisk was a charter member of the
GSAC, which formed in 2000. Fisk notified GSAC commissioner Phil
Williamson of its withdrawal in a letter from president Hazel
O'Leary. In the letter, O'Leary said the decision was a difficult
one but was in the best interest of the institution,
student-athletes, the athletic department and staff.
"The Great South Athletic Conference and Fisk University have had a
great relationship. We accept their withdrawal with deep regrets."
Williamson said. "I'm sure some of our institutions will continue
to play Fisk University in some sports. We wish Fisk University
well as they continue their involvement in NCAA."
Fisk will continue its membership in NCAA Division III and to
compete with current GSAC schools. The withdrawal of Fisk leaves
the GSAC with seven members: Agnes Scott, Huntingdon, LaGrange,
Maryville (Tenn.), Piedmont, Spelman and Wesleyan (Ga.). The
withdrawal will not affect the conference's NCAA automatic bid
status in women's basketball.
