MIT wins four in Taiwan MIT capped its first international men's basketball tour since 1983 with a win in the Kainan University International Basketball Tournament. The Engineers won four games on their trip, while Hamidou Soumare won the tournament's slam dunk contest.
The team won Friday's championship game against a professional Taiwan team 80-68 behind 23 points from D3hoops.com fourth team All-America guard Mike D'Auria.
"The intensity was unmatched," said coach Larry Anderson. "In my 19 years of coaching, I have never seen something like this . . . both the level of play and the enthusiasm of the crowd."
Soumare scored 12 points in the third quarter alone as the Engineers opened up a lead of as many as 22 points, 61-39. He finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jimmy Bartolotta and Will Mroz added 13 points apiece.
"We played inspired basketball today," said assistant coach Oliver Eslinger. "This was by far the most exciting game I have ever been a part of."
MIT won its first three games against university teams from the region by an average score of 98-53. |
