Gallaudet Beats Capital
WASHINGTON -- Gallaudet's women's team upset No. 2 Capital 78-75 to win the Gallaudet Holiday Tournament in Washington, D.C. The Bison (3-1) got off to a quick start with the help of junior guard Ronda Johnson, who scored the first eight Gallaudet points. Capital (4-1) trailed 18-10 seven minutes into the game, but pulled ahead when guard Tenise Moffis drained a three-pointer, making the score 21-18. Although the No. 18 Bison never trailed in the second half, it had to withstand several Crusader runs. The last started at 6:54, when 6-1 junior Kendra Meyer hit a layup, cutting the lead to 64-54. The Crusaders kept chipping away at the lead until it was down to one at 70-69 with :57 remaining. Johnson made a jumper and two free throws and Ronda Jo Miller grabbed a key rebound and sank two foul shots to put the game away. Johnson finished with 27 points, four assists and two steals, while Miller ended up with 22 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Meyer had game highs with 31 points and 14 rebounds in addition to four steals for Capital.

D'Youville Wins
D'Youville recorded its first-ever Division III win Nov. 23 with a 95-61 victory against Keuka. The Spartans, a second-year provisional member, went 0-24 last year and also dropped their first two games this season at the University of Rochester Tournament. But new head coach Brian Miller and a determined group of hard-working players gave the Buffalo school its first win in nearly 18 months Tuesday night. "It was great to get the first one, but we have much higher expectations than that," Miller said. "I felt so happy for the few guys we have left who went through the tough times last season ... they have stuck with it and deserve to feel good about themselves." The Spartans jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead then opened things up after the intermission. Phil Harlow, a junior college transfer from Alfred State who Miller recruited while coaching the Empire State Games this summer, poured in 23 points and handed out 7 assists, while Mike McCarthy, a former Division I player at Canisius who followed his former coach down Main Street in Buffalo, added 19 points and six steals.

Wilkes Men Knock Out Cabrini
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- A game that was supposed to pit two heavyweights turned into an early round knockout as No. 3 Wilkes raced out to a commanding 21-point halftime lead and was never seriously threatened in an 83-57 pasting of Cabrini. The guard tandem of seniors Chad Fabian and Dave Jannuzzi spearheaded the Wilkes charge in the opening 20 minutes. Fabian caught fire late in the first period to knock down a pair of three-pointers on his way to 12 first half points. Jannuzzi contributed nine first-half points, while Greg Barrouk had seven in the opening period, to lead Wilkes (3-0) to a 44-23 halftime lead. The second half was all Wilkes as well, as the Colonels opened up leads as big as 34 points. Fabian finished with a game-high 17 tallies to lead Wilkes. Jannuzzi had 12 points and five assists, while Ron McIntyre finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Jason Sheakoski also had an impressive performance for Wilkes with eight points and nine rebounds. Cabrini (0-1) got 11 points from Tim Anderlonis and 10 points and 12 rebounds from Randall Sims. The Cavaliers shot just 33.3% in the opening half, 34.3% for the game. The teams were preseason picks to win their respective conferences.

Kalamazoo's Phillips Scores 1,000th Point
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Brad Phillips had a career night while guiding Kalamazoo past Goshen 91-64. Phillips led all scorers with 24 points on his way over the 1,000-point plateau. The senior guard from Sturgis, Michigan stands at 1,011 career points two games into his final season in the orange and black. The Hornets also received solid performances from their two other seniors. Center Adam Verseput scored 18 points while pulling down seven rebounds, including four on the offensive glass. Point guard Steve Thwaites added 11 points. Kalamazoo shot 52.5% from the field and scored 37 points off 24 Goshen turnovers. The Hornets turned the ball over 16 times and outrebounded the Maple Leafs 40-25. Kalamazoo (2-0) is off to its best start since the 1994-95 campaign when they began the season 3-0. The last time the Hornets scored more than 90 points in consecutive games was in 1990-91.

Simpson Men Win Illinois College Tournament
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- Joe Coppola paced a balanced attack with 15 points and led Simpson to a 72-56 win Nov. 20 against Blackburn in the title game of the Bill Merris Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Illinois College.

The Storm's Chris Johnson tossed in 14 points and teammate Josh Vander Weerdt added 10 as Simpson (2-0) opened a three-point lead at the break and was never threatened in the second half. Vander Weerdt collected nine rebounds as the winners won the battle of the boards 48-41.

The Storm forced 25 Tiger turnovers and limited Blackburn to just 35.7% shooting (20-56) for the game. Blackburn's leading scorer was Drew Logan who charted 10 points.

In the opening round, Simpson posted a 79-68 win against Benedictine while Blackburn edged Illinois College 72-70.

Frigo was voted tournament MVP while the all-tourney team included Simpson teammates Vander Weerdt and Jesse Harris; Blackburn's Harrell and Luke Hennings, and Illinois College's Matt Espenschied.

Already Knocked Off
Less than 24 hours after the release of the first regular-season D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, No. 6 Rowan, No. 12 Johns Hopkins and No. 18 Trinity (Conn.) all lose for the first time this season. Rowan and Trinity lost their season openers to Montclair State and Eastern Connecticut State, respectively, while Hopkins (2-1) lost in overtime to Goucher at Towson, Md. The Blue Jays led Goucher (1-2) 50-38 with 10:38 left but allowed a 23-9 run and had to rally with a tip-in at the buzzer to force the extra frame.

No. 18 Gwynedd-Mercy Loses
SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna's women's team avenged a season-ending loss to Gwynedd-Mercy in last season's NCAA Tournament, defeating the Griffins 71-62 in the Susquehanna Varsity Club tournament championship. The win allowed Mark Hribar to tie current Susquehanna A.D. Don Harnum for most wins in Susquehanna basketball history, now with a record of 201-104 (.659). Harnum went 201-153 (.568) in 14 years as the Crusader men's basketball coach. The Crusaders wedged open double-digit leads twice in the second half, only to have the Griffins battle back both times -- the last taking a 57-45 advantage with 9:59 to play down to one at 59-58 with just 7:00 to go. But Susquehanna outscored them 12-4 the rest of the way, with Karen Kern scoring five and Mandy Horner four in that span.

Team of the Year Center Out
Chaz Smoot, the first-team center on the 1998-99 D3hoops.com Team of the Year, has been removed from the men's basketball team and is no longer a student at Anderson University in wake of an altercation Nov. 5 at a nightspot where Smoot works as a bouncer. Smoot, who averaged 23.5 points and shot 61.8% from the floor for the 20-6 Ravens, told the Anderson Herald-Bulletin he understands he has been expelled and is trying to catch on with another basketball team for the 1999-00 season.

"I want to keep some of the details of what happened quiet for a few days, until I know what is going on," Smoot said.

Anderson University prohibits the purchase, possession or use of alcohol or illegal drugs by any student on or off campus. According to Anderson Police Department Sgt. Ray Novak Jr., Smoot was involved in a fight with Brandon Buck at 2:46 a.m. and that according to the paperwork filed there was a verbal confrontation between Smoot and Buck that involved a female. No arrests were made.

Wash U. Three-Peat?
It should come as no surprise that two-time defending national champion Washington University is No. 1 in our women's preseason Top 25. The Bears ride a 38-game winning streak into the 1999-00 campaign and Alia Fischer's senior year. But who else got a first-place vote? Was it national runner-up St. Benedict? Final Four returnee Scranton? Mid-'90s two-time champ Capital?

Avoid These Preseason Mags
We know preseason college basketball magazines are reaching your newsstands. As a public service, we'll let you know which ones contain a Division III men's preview and which ones to avoid like the plague. Most disturbing is the lack of coverage in the Sporting News, which covered Division III in the past. Not only do we recommend NOT buying these magazines, but we'll provide you with e-mail addresses to which you can complain.

Sporting News: No coverage. bdubin@sportingnews.com
Athlon: No coverage. athlon@nashville.net
Lindy's: No coverage. lindyfb@aol.com

If you must buy a magazine in which a non-expert on Division III attempts to choose a Top 10 and preseason All-America team, try Street & Smith's.
