Gallaudet Beats Capital
WASHINGTON -- Gallaudet's women's team
upset No. 2 Capital 78-75 to win the Gallaudet Holiday Tournament in Washington,
D.C. The Bison (3-1) got off to a quick start with the help of junior
guard Ronda Johnson, who scored the first eight Gallaudet points. Capital
(4-1) trailed 18-10 seven minutes into the game, but pulled ahead when
guard Tenise Moffis drained a three-pointer, making the score 21-18. Although
the No. 18 Bison never trailed in the second half, it had to withstand
several Crusader runs. The last started at 6:54, when 6-1 junior Kendra
Meyer hit a layup, cutting the lead to 64-54. The Crusaders kept chipping
away at the lead until it was down to one at 70-69 with :57 remaining.
Johnson made a jumper and two free throws and Ronda Jo Miller grabbed
a key rebound and sank two foul shots to put the game away. Johnson finished
with 27 points, four assists and two steals, while Miller ended up with
22 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Meyer had game highs
with 31 points and 14 rebounds in addition to four steals for Capital.
D'Youville Wins
D'Youville recorded its first-ever Division III win Nov. 23 with a 95-61
victory against Keuka. The Spartans, a second-year provisional member,
went 0-24 last year and also dropped their first two games this season
at the University of Rochester Tournament. But new head coach Brian Miller
and a determined group of hard-working players gave the Buffalo school
its first win in nearly 18 months Tuesday night. "It was great to get
the first one, but we have much higher expectations than that," Miller
said. "I felt so happy for the few guys we have left who went through
the tough times last season ... they have stuck with it and deserve to
feel good about themselves." The Spartans jumped out to a 10-point halftime
lead then opened things up after the intermission. Phil Harlow, a junior
college transfer from Alfred State who Miller recruited while coaching
the Empire State Games this summer, poured in 23 points and handed out
7 assists, while Mike McCarthy, a former Division I player at Canisius
who followed his former coach down Main Street in Buffalo, added 19 points
and six steals.

Connecticut State, respectively, while Hopkins (2-1) lost in overtime
to Goucher at Towson, Md. The Blue Jays led Goucher (1-2) 50-38 with 10:38

No. 18 Gwynedd-Mercy
Loses
SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna's women's team avenged a season-ending
loss to Gwynedd-Mercy in last season's NCAA Tournament, defeating the
Griffins 71-62 in the Susquehanna Varsity Club tournament championship.
The win allowed Mark Hribar to tie current Susquehanna A.D. Don Harnum
for most wins in Susquehanna basketball history, now with a record of
201-104 (.659). Harnum went 201-153 (.568) in 14 years as the Crusader

the last taking a 57-45 advantage with 9:59 to play down to one at 59-58
with just 7:00 to go. But Susquehanna outscored them 12-4 the rest of
the way, with Karen Kern scoring five and Mandy Horner four in that span.
Team of the Year Center
Out
Chaz Smoot, the first-team
center on the 1998-99 D3hoops.com Team of the Year, has been removed from
the men's basketball team and is no longer a student at Anderson University
in wake of an altercation Nov. 5 at a nightspot where Smoot works as a
bouncer. Smoot, who averaged 23.5 points and shot 61.8% from the floor
for the 20-6 Ravens, told the Anderson Herald-Bulletin he understands
he has been expelled and is trying to catch on with another basketball
team for the 1999-00 season.
"I want to keep some
of the details of what happened quiet for a few days, until I know what
is going on," Smoot said.
Anderson University
prohibits the purchase, possession or use of alcohol or illegal drugs
by any student on or off campus. According to Anderson Police Department
Sgt. Ray Novak Jr., Smoot was involved in a fight with Brandon Buck at
2:46 a.m. and that according to the paperwork filed there was a verbal
confrontation between Smoot and Buck that involved a female. No arrests
were made.
Wash
U. Three-Peat?
It should come as no surprise that two-time defending national champion
Washington University is No. 1 in our women's preseason Top 25. The Bears
ride a 38-game winning streak into the 1999-00 campaign and Alia Fischer's
senior year. But who else got a first-place vote? Was it national runner-up
St. Benedict? Final Four returnee Scranton? Mid-'90s two-time champ Capital?
Avoid These Preseason
Mags
We know preseason college basketball magazines are reaching your newsstands.
As a public service, we'll let you know which ones contain a Division
III men's preview and which ones to avoid like the plague. Most disturbing
is the lack of coverage in the Sporting News, which covered Division III
in the past. Not only do we recommend NOT buying these magazines, but
we'll provide you with e-mail addresses to which you can complain.
