Shannon Sets Maryville
Scoring Record
Junior guard Henry Shannon scored 28 points and became Maryville's career
scoring leader as the Saints (11-7, 7-1) defeated Westminster (4-13, 4-4)
83-67. He finished the game with 1,563 points, five more than the previous
record held by Lloyd McClain.
Hope Flying Dutchmen
Extend Win Streak to 18
The nationally-ranked Flying Dutchmen extended their winning streak to
18 games Jan. 31 with a hard fought 85-79 MIAA victory against Olivet.
For the second time this season, the Flying Dutchmen built a big halftime
lead only to have Olivet rally in the second half to make a game of it.
On Saturday the Flying Dutchmen led 51-34 at halftime. Hope's lead was
11 points with three minutes to play, but Olivet was able to trim it to
four points with just less than a minute to play. Hope used free throws
to hold off the Comets to improve to 18-1 on the season and to 7-0 in
the MIAA men's basketball standings. The Flying Dutchmen were playing
without leading scorer David Meulenberg who was sidelined with a leg injury
suffered Jan. 30 in practice. Meulenberg missed the 1995-96 season with
a similar injury. His status for the rest of this season is undetermined.
Five Hope players scored in double figures for the Flying Dutchmen led
by senior Kris Merritt with 18 points. He also blocked five shots. Senior
Dan Hekken added 16 points, including 8-for-8 on free throws, followed
by Joel Holstege with 15.
Springfield Men Improve
to 16-1
Forward Phil Robinson led six players in double figures with 15 points
as Springfield ran its winning streak to seven games with an easy 96-72
victory against city rival Western New England on Saturday at Blake Arena.
The Pride improves its record to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in the Constitution
Athletic Conference. Center Benjamin Otis added 13 points and 9 rebounds.
Guards Tom Keane and Ken Payette led the Golden Bears (1-15, 0-7) with
15 and 14 points, respectively. Springfield visits Coast Guard (10-7,
7-2) in an important CAC game Monday night in New London, Connecticut.
Gallaudet Women Lose
Second in a Row
Catholic University routed Gallaudet 79-58 to send the Bison to their
second consecutive Capital Athletic Conference loss and second overall
in three games. The Bison, ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic Region, fell to
15-3 after losing at York 84-81 and Catholic. Catholic (6-10, 2-6) was
led by senior center Katie Pogge's 21 points and 10 rebounds and held
preseason All-America Ronda Miller to 19 points and tied for a career-low
eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Catholic's men won their 10th straight, beating
Gallaudet 90-62 to clinch the best start in the program's 86-year history
at 15-3.
Burkhart, Edwards Join
1,000 Point Club
Hollis Edwards has firmly etched his name in the Adrian record book. The
6-1 senior guard recently surpassed the 1,000 point plateau. Edwards,
who entered Adrian's Jan. 28 game against Olivet with 984 career points,
scored a team-high 17 points to reach the milestone. He is the 14th player
in Bulldog men's basketball history to score over 1,000 points and the
first since 1990 (when Brent Kelley and Daryl Dittmer both topped the
mark). He has played in just 66 games as a Bulldog, but he has averaged
15.2 points per contest and has been Adrian's top all-around player since
his arrival. Bradd Burkhart's game-high 22 points, including the 1,000th
of his career, was not enough Jan. 28, as the Washington College men's
basketball team lost at Ursinus 81-74. Burkhart's 22 gives him a current
total of 1,002 points for his career. He is the 27th player to join the
Washington College 1,000-point club.
Connecticut College's
Guckian Reaches 1,000
New London, Conn. -- Connecticut College men's basketball senior forward
Aaron Guckian became the ninth player in the history of the program to
score 1,000 career points. The milestone occurred in an 83-75 win over
NESCAC rival Wesleyan on January 21 in Middletown, Conn. Guckian helped
rally the Camels (12-2) from a 43-29 halftime deficit with 29 points on
9-for-10 shooting. He was also 11-for-14 from the foul line. Earlier this
season, Guckian became the second player in the history of the men's basketball
program to have over 500 career rebounds. With 596, he ranks second on
the Camels all-time list.
Platteville Takes Three-Game
WIAC Lead
Wisconsin-Platteville turned back Wisconsin-Oshkosh 68-53 in men's basketball
Wednesday before 1,427 fans in Williams Fieldhouse, giving the Pioneers
a three-game lead over the WIAC field at the season's halfway point. The
Pioneers jumped out to a 40-28 halftime lead, thanks to 51.7% shooting.
Oshkosh was never able to cut the lead below double digits in the second
half. Ben Hoffmann led the Pioneers with 22 points and 5 steals, while
Mike Jones recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Merrill
Brunson added 11 points. Brad Clark led Oshkosh with 20 points. The Pioneers
tied for second in the NABC Division III poll, improved to 16-0 overall
and 8-0 in league play. Oshkosh fell to 13-3, 5-3.
Wabash Men Post 1,000th
All-time Win
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- The Wabash men's basketball team recorded its
1,000th all-time win with an 82-65 victory against arch-rival DePauw on
Wednesday night. Junior All-America forward Chad Tabor paced the Little
Giants in scoring with 23 points to increase his career total to 1,224
points, good for seventh place on Wabash's all-time scoring chart. Sophomore
guard Josh Estelle added 21 points for Wabash (14-3, 5-1), ranked third
in the Midwest Region. DePauw (12-5, 2-4 ICAC), ranked fifth in the Midwest,
was led by junior guard Jess McKinney's game-high 24 points.
No. 5 New Jersey Falls
to D-I No. 11 Princeton
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Division I Princeton returned from its 16-day break
and defeated the College of New Jersey 59-50. Joe Amari scored 20 points
off the bench and Bill Burr added 11 for New Jersey (14-2) as the Lions
faced a Division I foe for the first time since defeating Rider in overtime,
75-69, Feb. 12, 1990. "It's a whole different ballgame between Division
I and Division III," New Jersey coach John Castaldo told Sports Ticker.
"But I think our league can be competitive. I have nothing but praise
for my players in terms of their intensity, their aggressiveness and their
focus." Princeton improved to 14-1.
Scheve Sets Wilmington
Women's Win Mark
WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Jerry Scheve became the all-time winningest coach
in Wilmington College women's basketball history with a 57-53 victory
over Hanover on Jan. 20 at Fred Raizk Arena. The win was the 119th of
Scheve's career, surpassing the 118 wins Sharon Sims amassed from 1978-79
until 1989-90. Now in his eighth season, Scheve has a 119-73 career record.
The Lady Quakers have won 10 of their last 11 games and are 14-3 on the
season.
Hope Men Win 17th Straight,
Shooting 75%
ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Flying Dutchmen made 38 of their 51 shots to finish
with a shooting percentage of 74.5% in a 94-75 MIAA victory against Adrian.
Hope shot 78% (18 of 23) in the first half to set the tone for the game.
Hope led 46-35 at halftime and then scored the first 11 points of the
second half to take command. David Meulenberg (9-for-12) and Dan Van Hekken
(8-for-12) paced the Flying Dutchmen with 22 points apiece while Joel
Holstege (6-for-7) added 15 points and with 10 assists. Hope's 17-game
winning streak remains the longest among all NCAA Division III teams.
Randolph-Macon Wins
1,100th Game All-Time
SALEM, Va. -- Senior guard Chris Gerlufsen netted a team-high 18 points
to lead Randolph-Macon College past Roanoke 62-55. The win is the 400th
for Head Coach Hal Nunnally, and the 1,100th in the history of the Yellow
Jackets program. Junior guard Dewayne Bullock was Roanoke's leading scorer
with 10.
Bridgewater Women Remain
Undefeated
Bridgewater outscored Randolph-Macon 6-2 in the final 57 seconds to secure
a 66-61 victory. Senior forward Jennifer Young paced the Eagles with 19
points, while junior forward Connie Ritchie added 15 points and 10 rebounds
to the Bridgewater cause. Trailing 30-28 at the half, BC outscored RMC
38-31 in the second for the win. Four Yellow Jackets players scored in
double figures, including Allison Beightol who scored 14. Bridgewater,
ranked #1 in the South Region, improved to 15-0, 12-0 in the ODAC, and
extended its conference lead to 2.5 games over Randolph-Macon. The Yellow
Jackets, ranked No. 5 in the South, fell to 10-3, 8-1.
Hope Gets VanWieren 400th
Win
An appreciative Civic Center crowd paid tribute to coach Glenn VanWieren
Wednesday as he guided his Hope College Flying Dutchmen to a milestone
400th victory by topping Alma 96-78. The Flying Dutchmen extended the
nation's longest winning streak to 16 games. Hope is 5-0 in the MIAA and
16-1 overall. In 21 seasons, Van Wieren has coached the Flying Dutchmen
to a 400-124 record. It took just 111 games for him to move from his 300th
win to the 400th, a four-year winning clip of 90%. Senior Dan Van Hekken
led all scorers with 23 points behind five three-pointers. Senior Joel
Holstege added 12 points and had seven assists.
Susquehanna Men Upset
D-II Bloomsburg
SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- While Division II Bloomsburg used its superior height
for a 46-26 rebounding advantage, it couldn't stop the offensive game
of Susquehanna's 6-5 sophomore post player Mike Barrette. Barrette scored
16 on 7-for-9 shooting from the field. He drilled a three-pointer from
the right side with 1:11 left to tie the game at 70, and hit the 12-footer
from the right baseline off the dribble with :36 left to give his team
the lead for good as the Crusaders pulled the upset, 75-73. The game was
still in doubt until sophomore power forward Ed Antoszewski stole a pass
by Wessell and was fouled with :19.3 left. Antoszewski made one of two
free throws, but Barrette got the rebound and was fouled. While he missed
the free throw, the Crusaders again got the rebound, and senior co-captain
and point guard Pete Long sealed it with a couple of free throws.
Memorial Mass for Jack
Bruen
WASHINGTON -- Catholic University will hold a memorial Mass for former
player and coach Jack Bruen Saturday evening at 6:30 on campus. Bruen,
who graduated from Catholic in 1972 and coached there from 1982-89 died
of pancreatic cancer last Dec. 19. The Mass will be held immediately following
that afternoon's game between Catholic and Goucher and a reception will

Panko's 45 Lead Lebanon
Valley Past F&M
Lebanon Valley junior power forward Andy Panko scored a career-high 45
points to lead the Flying Dutchmen to an 81-69 victory against Franklin
& Marshall. Panko scored 25 consecutive points in the second half and
shot 14-for-23 from the field, 17-for-20 from the free throw line. Franklin
& Marshall, hurt by injuries and player defections, fell to 6-7.
Hope Rallies to Defeat
Calvin
Hope extended its winning streak to 15 games Saturday with a dramatic
87-85 overtime victory against rival Calvin before a capacity Calvin Fieldhouse
crowd and regional television audience. Coach Glenn VanWieren's Flying
Dutchmen needed to rally from a ten-point halftime deficit to claim their
fourth straight conference victory. The win was Hope's ninth consecutive
against Calvin and brings the storied rivalry to within one decision of

Tommies' MIAC Win Streak
Snapped
St. Benedict ended St. Thomas's winning streak Saturday afternoon 60-50.
The Tommies had won 65 consecutive conference games before falling to
the Blazers (13-0, 10-0 MIAC). Sophomore center Lura Wendorff led St.
Benedict with 28 points and 18 rebounds, shooting 9-for-13 from the floor.
St. Thomas (12-1, 9-1) trailed by 11 in the first half but pulled within
55-50 when Tara Miller hit a three-pointer with 3:18 left. The Blazers
scored the last five points from the line to seal the win. Miller and
Kristen Vipond led the Tommies with 13 points.
Colby's Foti Reaches
100-Win Mark
NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Colby-Sawyer head men's basketball coach Bill Foti
picked up his 100th career victory Jan. 17 with a 97-70 win against Curry.
The sixth-year head coach has posted a 100-40 (.714) record including
a 9-1 start this year. He entered the season with a 91-39 (.700) mark
which makes him the 21st winningest active Division III coach (based on
winning percentage) among those who have spent a minimum of five years
as a head coach. Foti's 1994-95 squad set the New Hampshire Division III
record for victories in a season (23) and hosted the ECAC Division III
New England Championship. He led last year's squad to its second trip
in three years to the ECAC Tournament with an 18-8 overall record. The
Chargers also finished first in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC)
North Division with an 11-2 mark versus CCC opponents.
Wooster Men Take Two-Game
NCAC Lead
Wooster beat Wittenberg 63-58 Jan. 17 to improve to 12-3, 7-0 in the NCAC
and take a two-game lead in the conference. It was the Scots' second win
against a regionally-ranked team in the last week. Chris Gardner led all
scorers with 21 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the line in the
final minute to seal the win. Jon Stafford led Wittenberg with 15 points
off the bench as the Tigers only got 31 points from their starting lineup.
