2002-03 milestones
2001-02 milestones

On a night when Bryan Depew closed his brilliant career at Whitworth by reaching 2,000 career points, Jon Young gave Pirate fans a glimpse of the future with a record-setting 3-point performance to lead Whitworth to an 82-66 win over visiting George Fox in a Northwest Conference men's game on Friday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Depew scored 22 points to finish his career with 2,013. He was recognized at halftime of the game as Whitworth's all-time leading scorer in men's basketball, receiving a ball signed by 12 of the 14 other players on the 1,000 career point list, all of whom were in attendance at the game.

Young scored all 23 of his points in the second half to spark the Pirates to a comfortable lead. He drained 7/11 from three-point range to set a new Whitworth record for three-pointers in a season with 80. He broke the record of 79 held by Ryan Nelson, who was in attendance as one of the 1,000 career point scorers. The seven treys made also tied the Pirate record for makes in a game, which is also held by Nelson, Gabe Jones (1996) and Brian Myers, who originally set the record and was another of the 1,000 career point scorers recognized this evening.

Whitworth (19-6 overall, 12-4 NWC) also said good-bye to six seniors who played their final game in Whitworth uniforms. The group of six included Depew, Scott Bierlink, Byron Borton, John Gebbers, Robert Johnson, and Pete Svennungsen. Depew, Bierlink and Johnson all played for four years and finish their careers with a record of 75-30, the second-best four-year mark in school history.

George Fox (7-17, 3-12) jumped to an early lead, which reached six points (11-5) on a basket by Chris Parker. The Bruins led 17-13 when the Pirates used an 11-0 run, capped by a Depew basket, to grab a 24-17 lead. Whitworth upped its advantage to 35-25 on a lay-up by Bierlink before George Fox closed to within 37-31 at halftime on a basket by Mark Gayman just before the horn.

Whitworth only led 46-44 after two free throws by Scott Szalay with under 15 minutes to play. But then Young caught fire, sinking his first three-pointer. By the time he made his seventh with 3:17 to go, Whitworth had taken a 77-58 lead.

Bierlink finished with 19 points and six assists for Whitworth. Borton finished with career highs in points (five) and rebounds (nine).

Aaron Schmick led the Bruins with 19 points. Gayman totaled 16 points and seven rebounds while Szalay added 15 points and six boards.
