Elizabethtown
Women Four Wins From 800
When history calls Elizabethtown's storied women's basketball program
in February, it will be with an 800 number. Already the winningest program
in the history of NCAA women's basketball with 796 victories through January
26, the Blue Jay women need only four more to become the first program
in all divisions of NCAA women's basketball to record 800 all-time wins.
The University of Tennessee trails by 20 victories. Elizabethtown entered
its 71st season of women's basketball with 781 wins, a 24-game lead over
Tennessee and with the knowledge that the fast-charging Lady Vols were
still a year away.
With history in their sights, the Blue
Jays have won 14 in a row en route to a 16-1 start -- their best in over
a decade -- and a No. 13 national ranking. No stranger to the national
spotlight, Elizabethtown won the first D-III women's basketball national
championship in 1982 and appeared in the national championship game in
1983 and 1984. The Blue Jays became the first Division III women's program
to win two national titles when they captured the crown again in 1989.
Elizabethtown coach Yvonne Kauffman has posted a 516-164 record in her
29 years, the second-highest victory total in the history of Division
III women's basketball.

Emphasizes No. 1 Status at
Hopkins By Pat Coleman, D3hoops.com
BALTIMORE -- Franklin & Marshall lived
up to its billing as the top team in the Middle Atlantic, defeating Johns
Hopkins 78-52 in Goldfarb Gymnasium Jan. 30. The Diplomats (16-2) sprinted
out to leads of 23-9 and 33-12 against the Blue Jays, ranked fifth in
the region and held on with a parade of foul shots.
Junior guard Jerome Maiatico led the way
from the floor and at the line, coming off the bench to score a season-high
28 points on 15-for-17 free-throw shooting. Maiataco missed the first
five games of the season while spending the fall semester in Italy. "I
looked into doing it over the summer," said Maiataco, "but once I found
out it was either go in the fall or not at all, it was a no-brainer."
Maiataco, who started all 25 games for the Diplomats last season, was
averaging 7.3 points as a reserve before the game. "I feel really good.
It's just a matter of finding a niche on the team. You can't compare this
year's team to last year's."
Franklin & Marshall, coming off a squeaker
at Washington College, won for the eighth consecutive time. "It was nice
that we won that game, because Washington played extra well, but I don't
think that had anything to do with tonight," said head coach Glenn Robinson.
"I've never seen a team more ready to play. This team really respected
Hopkins and their record."
Johns Hopkins (14-4) shot only 12-for-29
from the foul line, most in the second half when the game was already
out of reach. The Blue Jays were led by senior guard Matt Geschke's 14
points. The two teams combined for 50 fouls, including a four-minute stretch
of the second half in which 10 were called.
Anderson Beats Another
Ranked Team
Anderson saw the return of its starting point guard and shot 53% from
the floor to defeat Franklin 74-73 in HCAC action. Franklin is the No.
2 team in the Midwest region and had defeated No. 1 Manchester earlier
in the week. Sophomore point guard Travis Daugherty returned to action
for Anderson (15-3, 6-2) after missing the Ravens' last four games with
a high ankle sprain. Daugherty came off of the bench and shot 5-for-6
from the field and 3-for-4 from three-point range with four assists. Junior
center Chaz Smoot led all scorers with 32 points with eight rebounds.
Franklin (also 15-3, 6-2) was led by Jason Sibley's 23 points, six rebounds,
six assists and four steals. Junior forward Paul Buening added 13 points.
No. 3 Connecticut College
Remains Unbeaten
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Connecticut College, ranked first in the Northeast
and No. 3 in the nation, received a strong second-half surge from sophomore
guard Kareem Tatum as the Camels held on to defeat Colby, 63-56, Saturday
in NESCAC action. The victory marked the first for Connecticut College
in seven trips to Waterville. The win also preserves the Camels' perfect
record at 14-0. Colby falls to 10-6. Colby senior co-captain James Spidle
scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in the first half, when the White
Mules built a 27-20 lead. However, the Camels finished the half with a
6-0 spurt to pull within one at the break. Tatum hit two free throws and
a scoop shot in the lane to cut the Colby lead to 27-26 at intermission.
The Mules came out firing in the second half, when freshman point guard
Joe Gutierrez capped an 11-5 run with a three-pointer to give Colby its
largest lead of the contest, 38-31. A three-point play and a lay-up by
Tatum sparked a 13-0 run for Conn College, which took a 44-38 lead with
13 minutes left. Colby drew to within two points after a pair of Gutierrez
foul shots made it 48-46, but the White Mules would get no closer as the
Camels used solid defense to build a 60-50 lead on their way to the eventual
victory. Tatum finished with 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting, while freshman
Rich Futia added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Connecticut College. Gutierrez
scored a career-high nine points in just 10 minutes of play for Colby,
while junior Ken Allen added 16 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.

Calvin
Edges Defiance to Stay Atop MIAA
Aaron Winkle hit a
layup with 6.1 seconds left as Calvin held off Defiance in an MIAA contest
Saturday 81-79. Defiance (10-8, 4-4) held a 9-7 lead with 14:43 left in
the first half before Calvin (15-3, 7-1) went on a 38-19 run to post a
44-23 lead at the 5:13 mark. On the ropes, the Jackets stepped up to score
14 straight points to go into the locker room trailing 44-37. In the second
half, Calvin would lead by 10 on three occasions but could not put Defiance
away. The Jackets' final charge pulled them to a tie at 79-79 on a Frank
Kill free throw with 36 seconds left. Calvin would come down the floor
and call a timeout with 18.9 ticks left in the contest, setting up Winkle's
winning basket on a feed from Jeff Overway. Kill's layup attempt fell
short at the buzzer. Winkle led all scores with 27 and led the Knights
with 12 boards, he and guard Scott Plaisier (with 25) combined for 52
of the Knights' 81 points. The Jackets were led by a pair of juniors in
guard Seth Newlove and forward Chad Kahle. Newlove poured in 22 points
while grabbing 12 boards, while Kahle chipped in 14 points and 12 rebounds
as the Jackets outrebounded the Knights 51-47.
Wheaton Women Upset NE
No. 1 Springfield
The Wheaton (Mass.) women won their fourth consecutive game, defeating
the No. 1-ranked team in the Northeast (No. 10 overall) 56-38. Using a
late first half run that saw Wheaton lead by nine at the half, the Lyons
pulled away with six quick second-half points by junior Stacy Auerr. Led
by Tracy Howard's 18 points, Wheaton took advantage of Springfield's poor
second-half shooting (24% from the floor, 8% from three-point range) performance.
The Lyons move to 8-7 overall, 3-0 NEWMAC while Springfield fell to 14-2,
2-1.
Opponents
Each Reach 1,000 Points
Two players from different teams each reached the 1,000-point plateau
for their respective careers. McMurry senior guard Macheic Crawford went
into Saturday's game with 995 career points and finished with 17 points,
giving her a grand total of 1,012 points. She is just the sixth to reach
the 1,000-point pinnacle in the 24-year history of the program. Hardin-Simmons
junior forward Kathryn Otwell needed 16 points to reach the 1,000-point
total going into the game and was 5-for-7 from the field and a perfect
6-for-6 from the line, giving her a grand total of 1,001 career points.
The 64-55 win moved HSU to 15-3 overall and 4-0 in the American Southwest
Conference West division, while McMurry fell to 12-7, 2-2 in divisional
play.

Mass-Dartmouth
Asst. Returns to Greek Pros
DARTMOUTH, MASS. -- Basketball has taken Stefan Pagios all over the world.
Tuesday night, he was sitting along side Mass-Dartmouth basketball coach
Brian Baptiste for the Corsairs' Little East Conference game against Rhode
Island College. Four nights later, Pagios will be in Fillipos, Greece,
playing professional basketball again. After three seasons in Greece,
following an outstanding career at Mass-Dartmouth, Pagios returned to
the Corsairs as an assistant basketball coach at the beginning of the
1998-99 season. Pagios had decided against returning to Greece for a fourth
season and, instead, returned to school and started his coaching career.
But his old team from Filipos put out a
call to last year's point guard, asking him to return. Without Pagios,
one of the Greek Professional Basketball League's top scorers and three-point
shooters last season, Filipos found itself at the bottom of its division
during the early part of its season. Unless the team's fortunes improved,
the team was looking at a potential demotion into a lower level at the
end of the season. After discussing the matter with Baptiste earlier this
week, Pagios decided to step down from his assistant coaching position
and return to Greece for the remainder of the season.
"He got a call from his old team and they
made him a very good offer to return," said Baptiste. "I guess they realized
they needed Stefan more than thought at the beginning of the season. It's
a great opportunity for him and probably his last chance to play basketball
professionally. I wished him all the luck in the world."
A two-time Little East Conference player
of the year, Pagios played for four seasons with the Corsairs. He earned
three First Team All-Little East Conference all star honors, while leading
the Corsairs to four consecutive LEC championships. Following his senior
season, Pagios, a resident of Pawtucket, R.I., was selected ECAC Northeast
Region Division III Player of the Year and NABC First Team All-North East
District, as well as an honorable mention All-American. Another former
Corsair player, Mosadi Caldwell, who was serving as a volunteer assistant
coach this season, will take over for Pagios for the remainder of the
season.
Austin
Women Hand E. Texas Baptist Home Loss
The Austin College Lady Kangaroos, the number three ranked team in the
NCAA South Region, jumped out to a 10-0 and never trailed in the game,
as they defeated the East Texas Baptist University Lady Tigers, the number
11 ranked team in NAIA Division I women’s basketball, 72-68, in Marshall,
Texas on Thursday night. The Lady Tigers (16-2) battled back to tie Austin
College at 61-61 with 3:58 to play on a three-pointer by Kelsey Moss,
but the Lady ‘Roos (13-4) regained the lead which they never relinquished
18 second later when junior center Rachel McNamara converted a three-point
play. McNamara finished the night with a double-double, 18 points and
a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior guard Marisa Hesse, Austin College’s all-time
leading scorer with 1,671 points, led the Lady Kangaroos in scoring with
22 points. Rounding out the AC scorers in double figures were seniors
Natasha Rodgers with 13 points and Kelly Killgo with 11 points.
Plymouth
State Knocks off Keene State
PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- The Plymouth State men's team handed Keene State its
first Little East Conference loss of the season Wednesday night, 87-84,
before a crowd of 1,000 at Foley Gymnasium. The Panthers got 18 points
from sophomore Tony Martinez and 17 points and eight assists from senior
All-American candidate Adam DeChristopher. Senior Eric McQueen added 13
points for Plymouth while senior Jamal Pettiford-Jones contributed 10
points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Keene sophomore Chris Coates led all
scorers with 23 points. Senior Jamie Smith and sophomore Fred Fieldhouse
each scored 12 points for the Owls. Plymouth, tied for sixth in this week's
NCAA Division III Northeast poll, improved to 12-4 overall, 6-2 in the
LEC. Keene, ranked second in the Northeast, remains in first place in
the conference; The Owls drop to 14-3 overall, 7-1 in the LEC.
The intrastate rivalry matched the coaching
wits of Plymouth's Jim Ferry, a 1990 Keene graduate, against Phil Rowe,
a 1974 PSC graduate. Rowe is also a former coach of the Panthers (1985-90).
Ferry is in his first season at Plymouth. After trailing for most of the
first half, Keene took a 47-46 lead into the locker room at the break.
Plymouth grabbed a nine-point lead midway through the second half (69-60),
but Keene stormed back with a 10-0 run to hold a 70-69 lead with 6:48
remaining. DeChristopher scored nine of his team's 18 points the rest
of the way, including a key three-pointer with 26 seconds to go that gave
the Panthers a 85-81 advantage. Fieldhouse answered with a three-pointer
of his own, but the Owls couldn't get any closer. Todd Steffanides hit
a pair of free throws with six seconds left to seal the win for Plymouth.
Wisconsin-Platteville
Posts 1,000th Victory
Wisconsin-Platteville earned its 1,000th men's basketball victory Wednesday
night with a 79-54 win against host Wisconsin-River Falls. The Pioneers'
all-time record is now 1,000-669. More than one-third of those victories
(340) have come during Coach Bo Ryan's 14-year tenure and more than one-quarter
are during this decade. Platteville has the best record in all of collegiate
basketball during the 1990s at 253-26. Merrill Brunson led a depleted
Pioneer squad with 25 points, while Blake Knutson added 18. Mike Jones
collected 10 rebounds and 7 assists. The Pioneers played without injured
players Colin Gassner and Tim Duffy. Senior Aaron Olson made his first
career start, recording nine points and four rebounds in 26 minutes. The
defending national champions improved to 17-1.

6 F&M Edges Washington College
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Senior guard
Matt Leddy led all scorers with 27 points to help visiting Franklin &
Marshall men's basketball team to a 77-76 Centennial Conference victory
against Washington College Wednesday night. Leddy shot 10-for-15 from
the floor and also grabbed six rebounds. His three-point basket with :03
remaining was the difference in the game. Washington (9-8, 3-4) led for
much of the game and was up by as many as 12 in the first half.
The Shoremen were up 50-40 with 15:48 left
in the second period. From there, the Diplomats (15-2, 6-0) went on a
26-15 run to take a 66-65 lead at the 5:15 mark. It was the first time
F&M had led since 9-8. The visitors were ahead for the next four minutes,
but Washington came back to tie the game 74 apiece with 1:03 left. The
Shoremen regained the lead, 76-74, on a basket by junior guard Steve DeVore
with :10 on the clock. Leddy came through with the game-winning three-pointer
with just :03 remaining.
DeVore led Washington with a team-high
17 points, on 6-for-10 shooting, including 4-for-4 from three-point land.
He also grabbed six rebounds and handed out five assists. Three Shoremen
finished with 12 points apiece: Adams, senior guard Corey Davis and junior
forward David Bell. Following Leddy's performance, only one other Diplomat
scored in double digits: Alex Kraft finished with 15 points and a team-high
seven rebounds.
Smoot
Scores 43 as Anderson Upsets Wabash
ANDERSON, Ind. -- Anderson got a career-high performance from its star
center to pick up an 86-84 win against Wabash tonight in HCAC men's basketball
action. Raven junior Chaz Smoot scored a career-high 43 points on 17-for-22
(77.2%) shooting from the field. Smoot's teammate guard Brent Brobston
added 22 points with seven assists, going 9-for-13 (69.2%) shooting. The
tandem accounted for 65 of Anderson's 86 total points. Smoot scored the
Ravens' first 19 points of the game in the win against a Little Giants
team ranked as an honorable mention in the Midwest region. As a team the
Ravens (14-3, 5-2 HCAC) had their best shooting performance of the season
with a 60.4% (32-53) mark from the field. Wabash (10-6, 3-3) received
a career-high 27 points from junior forward Brian Latham as four Little
Giant players scored in double-digits. Latham also grabbed a game-high
14 rebounds. Senior forward Chad Tabor added 20 points and junior guard
Josh Estelle 18. Anderson jumped out to a 19-13 lead in the first 7:30
of the game; the Ravens were up by as many as 15 points and held a nine-point
(45-36) advantage at halftime. Anderson started the second half with a
13-2 run and held on despite shooting 7-for-18 from the line in the final
three minutes.
Augsburg
Avenges Loss By Edging Gustavus
ST. PETER, Minn. -- Devean George moved closer to the 2,000-point plateau
with a 17-point, 15-rebound effort Wednesday night, leading Augsburg to
a 57-56 men's basketball victory against Gustavus Adolphus in a battle
of MIAC leaders before 2,942 fans at Gustavus' Gus Young Court in Lund
Center. The victory was just Augsburg's third in the last 24 meetings
between the two schools and the first for Augsburg at the Lund Center
in head coach Brian Amman's 11-year tenure. The win avenges an earlier
80-69 victory by Gustavus Dec. 9. George, a preseason
Team of the Year member and MIAC Most Valuable Player in 1997-98,
now has 1,949 career points and 725 career rebounds. Ammann, who played
for the Auggies from 1981-85, has the school's scoring record of 2,271
points in 106 games. The 17-point performance marked the 80th time George
has scored in double figures in his 84-game career -- the 72nd time in
his last 73 games. The Auggies improve to 14-2 overall and 11-1 in the
MIAC, giving the Auggies a two-game lead over second-place Gustavus, which
is now 10-5 overall and 8-3 in the MIAC. Augsburg (14-2, 11-1 MIAC) is
rated fifth in the West Region rankings. Gustavus (10-5, 8-3) was an honorable-mention
recipient in the region rankings. Augsburg led 25-21 at halftime and held
on after 20 lead changes and nine ties in the back-and-forth game. Gustavus
outscored the Auggies 35-32 in the second stanza. In the final minute
of play, senior Kris Long scored a basket and was fouled to give Augsburg
its 57-56 lead. Long missed the free throw for a possible three-point
play, but Gustavus was unable to score in its final two possessions, and
the Auggies escaped with the road victory.
Ouahid's
shot lifts Gallaudet past No. 19 Salisbury
Just when it appeared Gallaudet's 10-game winning streak would end, junior
guard Touria Ouahid bailed out the Bison with a clutch three-pointer,
followed later by a steal and two free throws to clinch Gallaudet's 88-84
victory against No. 19-ranked Salisbury State. The win gave the Bison
(12-3, 5-1 CAC) sole possession of first place in the CAC. Meanwhile,
Salisbury State (12-5, 5-2) suffered its second consecutive conference
loss after coming into the game ranked second in the Atlantic.
Ouahid’s three-pointer, her only triple
of the night, turned a one-point deficit into a two point lead with 1:20
remaining. After the teams traded layups, the Sea Gulls had a chance to
tie or win, but Ouahid stole the ball with 2.6 seconds left, drawing an
obligitory foul. The 5-6 junior finished with 26 points. As expected,
the Sea Gulls came out running. Salisbury State post players Jessica Latour
(21 points) and Lisa Neylan (22) each had solid games inside, scoring
layup after layup on passes from point guard Amy Cooke. Jessica Baker
and Elizabeth Barfuss each had six offensive rebounds, giving the Sea
Hawks a slew of second chances. (Salisbury State outrebounded Gallaudet
58-48.)
With Gallaudet Team of the Year center
Ronda Jo Miller on the bench with first half foul trouble, the Sea Gulls,
operating at their usual breakneck speed, had all the key ingredients
in place to build an early lead. However, the Bison stayed in the game
through the slicing, driving, and weaving of Ouahid and sophomore guard
Ronda Johnson. At halftime, Salisbury State led by only three, a moral
victory for the Miller-less Bison.
In the second half, Miller was dominant
on both ends. She finished with only 17 points, but dished out a season-high
seven assists, while also blocking seven shots. She had eight of her 12
rebounds in the second half, and her final rebound, with 2:50 left, was
the 1,000th of her career. Gallaudet surged ahead, but the Sea Hawks battled
back with a 10-2 run to retake the lead late in the contest, setting up
Ouahid’s heroics.
Wilkes
Tops Scranton in Key Middle Atlantic Battle
Wilkes raced out to an 18-point halftime lead and held off a furious second
half comeback attempt by Scranton to post a 67-58 MAC win before a sellout
crowd in the Marts Center. The victory improves the Colonels, ranked fourth
in the Middle Atlantic region, to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in the MAC Freedom
League. Wilkes, which extended its home winning streak to 24 games, won
its ninth straight contest overall. Scranton, ranked fifth in the region,
had a 10-game winning streak snapped and fell to 12-3 (6-1).
Wilkes got off to a hot start, jumping
out to a 36-13 first half lead. Junior guard Chad Fabian was the hot man
for Wilkes in the opening 20 minutes of play, cashing in 16 tallies to
send the Colonels into the locker room with a 43-25 advantage. Scranton
then mounted a second half comeback thanks to the play of sophomore guard
Al Callejas and sophomore forward Kevin Coutney. The duo helped the Royals
erase all but four of the 18-point halftime deficit. Scranton got to within
57-53 with five minutes remaining before Fabian made sure that the Royals
would not spring the upset. Fabian tallied six points in the final five
minutes, including a back-breaking three-pointer with just two minutes
to play that put the game away for good.
Fabian, who also contributed three assists
to the Wilkes cause, was joined in double figures by junior guard Dave
Jannuzzi, who finished with 13 points and three assists. Senior forward
Scott Cleveland chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds, while holding
Scranton's leading scorer, Jason Fisher, to a mere 13 points on 5-for-19
shooting. Callejas had 14 to lead the Royals, while the trio of Fisher,
Courtney and Henry Condron each registered 13 tallies.
Moravian's
Coughlin Scores 1,000th
BETHLEHEM, PA --- On a three-pointer with nine minutes left in the first
half of 75-59 lost to Elizabethtown College, Moravian College senior Jessie
Coughlin became the 12th player in Lady Greyhound history to surpass the
1,000-point plateau. Coughlin, who entered the game needing just one point,
took the three-pointer from the top of the key, which bounced off two
sides of the rim before it fell through. The two-time Middle Atlantic
Conference Commonwealth League All-Star and team MVP has played in 90
games during her career with 1,017 points, 321 rebounds, 316 assists and
289 steals. Only one other player in Moravian history, Sue Zimmerman '96,
has scored 1,000 points and added 300 assists and 300 steals in a career.
Coughlin, a 5-6 guard, has led Moravian to a 9-6 record this season and
a 52-38 record in four seasons. Coughlin is also a standout tennis player
and completed her career with the best winning percentage in school history,
.969, on a 62-2 record in second singles.
Calvin
Claims Sole Possession of First in MIAA
Calvin pulled out a 65-62 slugfest victory against visiting Albion to
move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA. Saturday's game
was in doubt for the majority of the contest as Albion led 31-28 at halftime,
shooting a blistering 60.9% from the field while Calvin hit just 39.3%
of its field goal attempts. The Knights were able to hang around on its
defensive pressure in the backcourt as the Britons committed 16 first-half
turnovers. In the second half, Albion would build its lead to 51-44 on
a jumper from junior Tim Czarnecki with 9:42 left to play but Calvin continued
to battle, whittling the lead down to two points on two separate occasions.
Calvin finally took its first lead of the
second half at 61-59 on a steal and layup from junior Aaron Winkle with
3:25 remaining but the Britons went back up 62-61 on a pair of free throws
from senior Jason Klein and a free throw from senior Steve Conger. Winkle
came up big again for the Knights as he floated in a running jumper in
the lane with 1:06 left to give Calvin a 63-62 advantage. With a chance
to retake the lead, the Britons misfired on a 17-foot jumper with under
40 seconds remaining and Calvin was able to control the rebound. Forced
to foul, Albion sent Calvin senior Ebong Eka to the line with 19 seconds
remaining. Eka swished both free throws, completing an 8-for-8 performance
at the line on the afternoon to give Calvin a 65-62 lead. Calvin sophomore
Brian Krosschell then blocked an Albion three-point attempt with five
seconds to go, allowing the Knights to pull out the heart-stopping victory.
Eka led Calvin (13-3, 5-1 MIAA) with 16 points and five rebounds while
Winkle added 15 points and senior Scott Plaisier 14 points and four steals.
Albion (9-7, 4-2) was led by senior Brock Peters who fired in 11 points
off the bench including three attempts from beyond the three-point arc.

came off the bench with 14 points. Freshman Michelle Stover scored 12
points while senior Jamie Rustad added 11. The game was marred by the
ejection of UIU coach Bill Wilson midway through the second half. Wilson
received his second technical and was tossed for arguing a foul call on
Vicky Ringenberg. Ringenberg fouled out, Wilson was ejected moments later.
Arielle Beck led the Peacocks (7-5, 4-3) with 20 while Ringenberg was
a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line to finish with 16 points.
Simpson improved to 13-1 (9-0).

points to help the host Western Maryland women's team to a 58-54 Centennial
Conference victory against Washington College Jan. 21. Snyder shot 10-for-16

not finished, however. The Shorewomen (8-6, 2-4) outscored the hosts 24-11
to re-take the lead, 50-49 with 3:05 left. The comeback was fueled by
10 points from freshman forward Alyson Britton, plus eight points from
junior guard Maggy Kilroy. That was the last time the Shorewomen would
lead. Western Maryland led for the next two minutes, until Britton nailed
two foul shots with :50 remaining for a 54-54 tie. The Green Terror took
the lead for good on a free throw by senior center Michele Jarman, and
two more foul shots by senior guard Kristin Miller and another by Snyder,
shut the door on Washington in the closing seconds. Western Maryland's
12-1 start is the best in the history of the program.
Southern
Maine Women Hand Bates First Loss
LEWISTON, MAINE -- Four Southern Maine starters scored in double figures
as the Huskies overcame a late rally to defeat Bates 55-52, snapping the
Bobcats' school-record 12-game winning streak. The Bobcats (12-1) jumped
out to a 21-12 lead over the first 14 minutes of the first half, but Southern
Maine (13-2) ended the half on a 15-4 run to take a 27-25 lead into the
locker room. The Huskies started the second half equally strong, using
a 17-10 run over the first eight minutes to open up a 44-35 lead, Bates'
biggest deficit of the season. Bates stormed with a 15-4 run of its own,
taking a 50-48 lead. Southern Maine then scored the seven of the last
nine points of the game over the final four minutes to make the 55-52
final.
The Huskies had a chance to ice the game
when Tracy Libby stepped to the line with 25 seconds left. The senior
missed both, but Bates was unable to get a shot off to tie the game. Southern
Maine was led by senior Susan Ware's double-double with 11 points and
10 rebounds, while Libby had 11 points, eight boards and five blocked
shots. Junior forward Emily King led Bates with a game-high 14 points.
Southern Maine committed 16 turnovers, but only three in second half.
The Bobcats had averaged at least 30 turnovers forced per game.
R-MC
Hands H-SC First Loss

to knock off previously unbeaten Hampden-Sydney 68-57. Matt Meehan led
all scorers with 22 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Brian Pirttima had 20

King's
Colyer Ends Season with Knee Injury
King's received devastating news Jan. 20 that senior point guard Elaine
Colyer, who suffered a knee injury during the team's trip to the Bahamas
two weeks ago, will be lost for the remainder of the season, ending one
of the most prolific careers in school history. Colyer injured her right
knee in the opening minutes of a 67-62 loss to William Paterson Jan. 5.
Colyer was originally thought to be out two to three weeks, but after
beginning a vigorous daily three-hour rehab program an orthroscope exploratory
procedure revealed a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament.
Colyer underwent reconstructive surgery to repair the damage.
One of 10 finalists for last year's inaugural
Josten’s Trophy as the Division III "Player of the Year," Colyer started
79 of her last 80 games at King’s and concluded her career ranked as King’s
fifth all-time leading scorer with 1,167 points while standing first wth
446 assists. "Elaine is a great person and has been a tremendous asset
to our team. It is a tragedy that a person of her caliber on and off the
floor has something like this happen to her," King’s coach Bryan Whitten
stated. "She has been our team leader and was one of the main factors
in our rebuilding this program back to a high level. People will look
back at her career years from know and know that she was a major part
of King’s College women’s basketball. . . She will truly be missed." Since
Colyer’s injury, King’s (9-5) has lost three of its last five games.
F&M
Hands Lebanon Valley First Defeat
Freshman center Alex Kraft
and junior guard Mark Sadowski shared team-high scoring honors with 18
points and junior guard Mike Ritacco added 14 to lead Franklin & Marshall
(11-2) to a 62-52 win against Lebanon Valley (12-1). In addition to the
season-high 18 points, Kraft also grabbed a game and season-high 12 rebounds
for the Diplomats, who snapped a three-game losing streak vs. the Flying
Dutchmen. Lebanon Valley, ranked No. 2 in the Columbus Multimedia rankings,
snapped a 12-game winning streak despite 22 points and 11 rebounds from
senior Team of the Year member Andy Panko. Lebanon Valley also got 10
points and 10 rebounds from junior center Dan Pfeil. The Diplomats got
out to a 27-18 halftime lead by holding the Flying Dutchmen to just 33%
from the field (10-for-30). In the second half, Franklin & Marshall stretched
its lead to 15 points as Kraft hit two three-point goals and Ritacco added
one. The Flying Dutchmen cut the lead to 54-48 in the final minutes, but
Sadowski hit 5-for-6 from the foul line in the final two minutes to help
the Diplomats clinch the victory.
Susquehanna
Tops D-II Bloomsburg -- Again
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Threes were the charm for the Susquehanna University
men's basketball team as the Crusaders shocked Division II Bloomsburg
for the second straight season -- this time in Bloomsburg's Nelson Fieldhouse,
72-68. Wearing number three, Crusader senior small forward Tony Mennito
(pictured) hit a career-high seven treys while scoring a game and career
high 25 points to lead his team to just its third victory of the season
and third against their D-II neighbors in the last four meetings. Mennito's
heroics led Susquehanna in a 13-for-23 night from beyond the three-point
arc. Monday's game ended the current three-year series with the Huskies
and produced an upset even greater than Susquehanna's 75-73 home win last
season. The Crusaders improved to 11-3 last season with that win, while
this season's team is now just 3-9 after winning for the first time in
seven road games this season. Bloomsburg fell to 9-6.
"He's (Mennito) had big nights before.
The things that I've noticed with Tony is that it's either right out of
the blocks -- the first five or six minutes of the game -- or else he
waits until the second half," said Susquehanna head coach Frank Marcinek.
"Tonight, he had one field goal in the first half and in the second half,
really got it cranked up and really took the game over." The teams were
deadlocked at 68 with 2:13 left when freshman forward Corey Green put
Susquehanna ahead for good, taking a nice pass from Jarrod O'Neill for
a layup and a 70-68 lead. Bloomsburg missed back-to-back shots to tie,
and then with the shot clock running down, sophomore point guard Shawn
Munford fouled Susquehanna's best free throw shooter in senior guard Sean
Breckley, who calmly sank both shots with :16 left to give his team the
final margin of victory.
Lycoming
Continues to Surprise
Junior guard John Tompkins canned a 3-pointer with one second left in
the second overtime period to lift Lycoming (11-2, 3-1) to an 89-86 double-overtime
win over FDU-Madison (7-3, 1-2) in MAC Freedom League action. FDU-Madison's
Bill Timony had tied the contest at 86-86 with a trey with 11 seconds
to play. Lycoming came to the other end and worked the ball inside to
senior center Kevin Rutherford who found Tompkins open in the right corner.
Lycoming had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Rutherford's
off-balance shot at the buzzer missed to keep the game tied at 68-68.
FDU-Madison had the last shot in the first overtime, but Harry Vega's
jumper in the paint was off the mark and the game remained tied at 78-78.
Sophomore forward Brian Lindsay scored a team-high 23 points to pace Lycoming.
Junior guard Rasheed Campbell added 17, freshman guard Jason Black had
15, freshman forward Chris Napier chipped in 11, and Rutherford finished
with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
George
Drops in 52 for Augsburg
NORTHFIELD, Minn., Jan. 16 -- Senior Devean George scored a MIAC single-game
record of 52 points to lead Augsburg in a 105-97 overtime win against
Carleton Saturday. George broke the MIAC single-game scoring record of
49 points, set by Bill Sexton of Saint John's against Macalester on March
3, 1954. He also broke the Augsburg single-game scoring record of 48 points,
set Dec. 27, 1963 against Lincoln University by Dan Anderson, and later
tied by George with a 48-point effort in a four-overtime win against St.
Cloud State on Nov. 24. The Auggies (11-2, 8-1 MIAC) shot 61% for the
game and controlled the boards, outrebounding Carleton (7-6, 4-5 MIAC)
37-26, to keep control of first place in the MIAC.
George was an outstanding 18 of 23 from
the floor, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and added nine boards
to lead the Auggies to victory. The Knights, having rallied from a 15-point
deficit led by seven, 89-82 with 2:25 left in the second half, before
Augsburg went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 89-89 at the end of regulation.
The Auggies controlled the overtime period, led by Jeoffrey Reed, who
scored 10 of his 16 points in the extra period. The Auggies outscored
Carleton 16-8 in overtime. Carleton was led by Josh Wilhelm with 23 points
and nine rebounds in 23 minutes.
Simpson
Men on Fire from the Line
Simpson broke one free-throw record and tied another as the Storm men
defeated Central 94-82 Jan. 15 in IIAC men's basketball action. The Storm
set a new school record for free throw percentage in a game as the netters
hit on 95.5% of their free throws (21-for-22). The old record of 89% (17-for-19)
was set against Luther Feb. 2, 1996. Senior Nathan Ackerman matched the
school record for highest free-throw percentage in a game. The 6-6 forward
was 11-for-11 from the line, tying the record set by David Otte (20-for-20)
against William Penn Feb. 21, 1995. Ackerman is 13-13 from the free throw
line dating back to Tuesday night's game against Wartburg. Senior guard
Marty Richter scored Simpson's first nine points of the game and finished
with 19, while senior center Adam Doll charted 18 points and nine rebounds.
Wade Vander Molen led the Dutch with 21 points. Simpson improved to 9-4
(7-2 IIAC) while the Dutch fell to 5-7 (4-4).
St.
Norbert Women Shock Lake Forest
St. Norbert head coach Connie Tilley called it the biggest upset in her
22-year coaching career as the Green Knights knocked off Midwest Conference
frontrunner Lake Forest 65-61 Friday night. The Foresters came into the
matchup 10-1 (5-0 MWC). St. Norbert, on the other hand, was 4-6 overall
and playing without its leading rebounder and third-leading scorer Nadia
Czajkowski. However, the Green Knights got 16 points and 13 rebounds from
an unlikely source in sophomore Erin Raddatz as well as 22 points from
Julie Schill to post the upset. Liz Valela broke a 61-61 tie with a behind-the-head
circus layup with 1:26 left for the game-winner. Lake Forest led by five
at the half and shot just 29% in the second half to keep the Green Knights
in the game.
Hampden-Sydney
Drops Virginia Wesleyan
T.J. Grimes scored 19 points to lead Hampden-Sydney to a 70-50 win against
Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday evening. Jeremy Harris and Chris Fox added
15 each for Hampden-Sydney to help the Tigers improve to a perfect 12-0
(6-0 ODAC). Hampden-Sydney never trailed, and opened up a close game with
a 14-1 run in the final 6:16 to take a 40-23 lead into the locker room.
H-SC was up 19 midway through the second half, and Virginia Wesleyan (9-3,
5-2) used a 10-0 run the next 2:58 to draw within nine. But the Marlins
would not score for the final 6:26 of the game, going 0-for-7 from the
field to end the game. Hampden-Sydney shot 40% from the field, its lowest
mark of the season, but forced Virginia Wesleyan into 17 turnovers and
held the Marlins to a 36.4% clip from the floor. David Hobbs was the Tigers'
leading rebounder for the seventh time in 12 games, grabbing eight in
the game to go along with four points.
George's
35 Points Lead Augsburg Men
MINNEAPOLIS -- Devean George had game highs of 35 points and 13 rebounds
Wednesday night, leading the Augsburg men to a 75-69 victory against St.
Olaf in a MIAC game. George, a preseason Team of the Year member, reached
double figures for the 76th time in his 80-game career, and the 68th time
in his last 69 games. The double-double was George's 24th of his career
and it was the 14th time he has scored 30 or more points in a game. George
now has 1,815 career points (third in school history) and 682 rebounds
(fifth). Augsburg (10-2, 7-1 MIAC) took the lead for good at the 6:04
mark on a field goal from Jason Beckendorf which put the Auggies ahead
59-58. Beckendorf had 10 points, while Kris Long added 12 points and five
assists. St. Olaf (7-5, 4-4) was paced by freshman Jeb Johnson's 17 points
and senior Matt Jensen's 16 points and eight rebounds.
Guilford
Men Knock Off Randolph-Macon
Sophomore Jaron Randall hit one of two free throws with two seconds left
to lift Guilford (3-9, 2-5 ODAC) to a 58-57 win against Randolph-Macon
(9-3, 4-2 ODAC). The free throw capped an exciting game which saw Guilford
erase an eight-point second-half deficit with a 13-0 run. Sophomores Jon
Evans and Todd Ashworth scored 14 points apiece for the Quakers. Randall's
heroics capped a tightly-played game which featured six ties and seven
lead changes. The Quakers trailed by eight points with 8:59 to play, but
rallied with a 13-0 run over the next 6:09 to take a 57-52 lead with just
under three minutes left. The Yellow Jackets, whose other losses are to
Division I VMI and unbeaten Hampden-Sydney, rallied to tie the game at
57 on a three-pointer by senior forward Brian Pirttima with 0:38 to play.
Guilford missed three shots on the following possession, but Randall came
up with an offensive rebound and was fouled with two seconds left. Following
a Randolph-Macon timeout, Randall made the first of two shots. Pirttima
collected the rebound of Randall's second shot, but missed a midcourt
shot as time expired.

Hopkins Ends Chicago's 27-Game UAA Streak By Pat Coleman,
Editor, D3hoops.com
BALTIMORE Johns Hopkins junior guard
Jake Stroman deflected Chicago's inbounds pass with 3.7 seconds remaining
to preserve Hopkins' 58-57 victory. Chicago's Brad Henderson was forced
to take a desperation half-court shot which fell short as time expired.
The win ended Chicago's UAA-record 27-game league win streak.
The inbounds play ended an eventful final
two minutes of play in which the lead changed hands three times and six
timeouts were called. Hopkins (8-2) took a 56-54 lead on a dunk by junior
forward Joel Wertman with 1:59 left. After a Chicago timeout, Maroon sophomore
guard Jim Waichulis drained his fourth three-pointer of the game to regain
the lead. Waichulis then stole the ball on Hopkins' next possession, but
the Maroons (6-4) could not convert and turned the ball over with 0:52
left in the game. Hopkins center Jon Olson scored on a putback of an Antoine
Peoples miss to take a 58-57 lead with 31.2 seconds left in the game.
Chicago got the ball across halfcourt and
called a timeout with 25.4 seconds left. Senior guard Andy Strommen hit
the floor hard after a scramble for the ball with 7 seconds left and Chicago
took another timeout. Chicago nearly turned the ball over on the ensuing
inbounds play but got the ball after a scramble thanks to the alternate
possession arrow. Johns Hopkins then took two timeouts with 3.7 seconds
left before Stroman ended Chicago's chances.
"We're not a good ball-handling team,"
said Maroons coach Pat Cunningham. Despite the fact that Strommen was
originally one of the primary options for the team's final possession,
Cunningham downplayed his absence after the injury. "That was only the
last seven seconds. I'm not sure how much of a difference that would have
made."
Johns Hopkins got out to a 15-5 lead and
held on despite being held without a field goal the first 11:55 of the
second half. "We had a seven-point lead at the half," said Hopkins coach
Bill Nelson. "They didn't exactly burn the nets up while we were struggling."
In fact, Chicago scored only 16 points itself over that stretch while
the Blue Jays went 6-for-8 from the foul line.
The Maroons took a 47-43 lead with 6:21
left in the game before Peoples, playing in his first game since returning
from a season-long groin injury, scored on back-to-back possessions to
tie the game at 47. The teams then traded baskets the rest of the way.
"I thought we played hard at both ends
in the second half," said Cunningham, "but the game was won or lost in
the first 20 minutes."
Chicago, the two-time defending UAA champions,
had its opener against Washington U. snowed out last week, giving Johns
Hopkins the opportunity to end the Maroons' UAA streak. "I tried to use
that as a motivator," said Nelson.
Wertman led all scorers with 21 points
and was the only Johns Hopkins player in double figures. Strommen led
Chicago with 13 points while junior guard/forward David Steward added
10 points and 16 rebounds.
Hampden-Sydney
Tops Randolph-Macon
Hampden-Sydney used a 17-4 run over the final 8:10 of the game to post
a 60-46 win at Randolph-Macon on Tuesday night. The win marked the closest
game of the year for the Tigers, as the Tigers extended their winning
streak to 10 games to extend the best start in school history. The Tigers
held a 34-27 advantage at the half but Randolph-Macon chipped away at
that lead early in the second half and tied the game at 38-38 at the 11:43
mark. H-SC's Jeremy Harris converted a three-point play on H-SC's next
possession, and the Tigers maintained their lead for the rest of the game.
Harris scored nine of his 11 points in the final 11 minutes of the game,
including six of the Tigers' final eight points. Chris Fox led the way
for the Tigers with 13 points, as he shot 3-for-4 from three-point range.
T.J. Grimes added 11, including five in a row in consecutive possessions
during H-SC's game-winning run. Seniors David Hobbs and Kevin Garst both
had strong games, as the two combined for 16 points, 18 rebounds, and
five steals. They also keyed H-SC's defensive effort which held Randolph-Macon
to a 30.9% field goal percentage, 28.0% in the second half.
Mississippi
College Hands McMurry First Loss
Darrell Diamond's 27 points led four Mississippi College starters in double
figures, as the Choctaws knocked off McMurry, 78-65. McMurry had its worst
shooting performance in more than two years, as the Indians hit just 33.8%
from the field. The Choctaws did not fare much better from the field (22-for-55),
hitting just 40%. But the key came at the line, where MC hit 30 of 36
(86.7%), while McMurry converted just 12 of 24 (50%). McMurry's lone bright
spot was Brian Tudman's 21 points and 11 rebounds. Mississippi College
improved to 8-0, while the Indians (11-1) saw their winning streak end
at 17 games.

86-76 at the DuFour Center Jan. 4. The Cardinals (6-2) led 67-59 with
9:40 left in the game before the Camels (8-0) tied the game at 68 and
took the lead for good with 4:10 left. Sophomore guard Kareem Tatum led
Connecticut College with 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the floor,
while Dwayne Stallings added 17. "In the first half we didn't defend them
very well," said Camels head coach Glen Miller, "but we picked up our
intensity and pressure on and off the ball."
Catholic, which had shot 52% from the floor
and 63% from three-point range in the first half, struggled from the field,
shooting 37.5% from the floor and making only one three in the second
half. "We had a chance to extend our lead in the first half and didn't
take advantage of it," said Catholic coach Mike Lonergan. "Our foul trouble
really hurt us and our conditioning was a factor after our four-week layoff.
They seemed in better shape the last five minutes of the game."
The Camels closed the game with a 15-5 run,
ending Catholic's 20-game home winning streak.

Virginia
Wesleyan Men Improve to 6-1
Junior center Rich Peterson scored a season-high 26 points on 10-for-12
shooting from the floor, but it wasn't enough as Washington and Lee fell
to Virginia Wesleyan, 82-75, in ODAC men's basketball on Jan. 3. Peterson
also hit all six of his free throw attempts and gathered nine rebounds
and two blocks in the contest. As a team, the Generals (3-5, 2-2) shot
20-for-21 from the line (95%) and shot 46% from the floor, but the Marlins
(6-1, 3-0) nailed 54% of their shots, including 53% from three-point range
(9-for-17).

a 73-65 victory at the Calvin Fieldhouse Jan. 3 in a battle of teams in
the Columbus Multimedia ranking. No. 19 Calvin (8-3) took early control
of the contest midway through the first half as the Knights used a 9-0
run to take a 29-20 lead with 4:43 left in the half. No. 5 Defiance (9-2)
answered with a 9-0 run of its own, however, as Calvin committed six turnovers
and went 0-for-3 from the field to end the half to leave the score tied
29-29 at the half. The lead changed hands three times early in the second
half before the visiting Yellow Jackets took the lead for good at 39-38
on a layup from Jennifer Wachtman with 15:02 left in regulation and stretched
its lead to seven points at 55-48 on a jumper from Arin Gertsen with 7:46
left to play. The loss was Calvin's first in MIAA regular season play

in double figures in scoring as its inside tandem of Kerry Walters and
Robyn Fennema led the Knights with 15 points apiece. Senior Jenny Timbrook
led Defiance with 16 points while Shauna Graber had 15 and Mandy Crain
