McMurry Men Go to 10-0
McMurry rolled to 10-0 for the first time in school history with a 101-70 win against LeTourneau and set a new school record for consecutive wins at 16, dating back to last season. Goucher Men Deal Wooster First D-III Loss
TOWSON, MD. -- Goucher used a tenacious defensive effort to capitalize on 22 Scot turnovers and defeat Wooster 67-62. The Gophers scored 26 points off turnovers, while Wooster could only manage seven. Goucher battled back from a 54-49 deficit with 7:11 remaining to tie the game at 59 with 3:34 left. Goucher upped the ante to a five-point margin, 65-60, with two free throws by sophomore Darrian Lee at the 29-second mark. Wooster senior Ryan Gorman then hit a layup with 19 seconds remaining to cut the margin to 65-62, but Gopher senior guard Bakari Ward hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to move Goucher ahead by the 67-62 final. Ward led all scorers with 17 points and three assists. Wooster was led by Gorman's 14-point outing and a game-high ten rebounds. Wooster held a 39-26 rebounding advantage and shot 44% from the field to 45% for Goucher.

Panko Reaches 2,000-Point Mark
Lebanon Valley's Andy Panko scored 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Dec. 12 in a 91-61 win against Ursinus. Panko became the second player in school history to reach the 2,000-point plateau and is only 19 points short of Mike Rhoades' school record of 2,050 points.

Stallings' 35 Lifts Connecticut Coll. Past Hunter
Senior guard Dwayne Stallings pumped in a career-high 35 points and tied his own school record with eight three-pointers as Connecticut College remained undefeated with a 76-69 win against Hunter (3-3) Dec. 12. Stallings, whose previous career high was 30 points, was 11-of-20 from the field and 8-of-12 from three-point range. Connecticut College (7-0) also received 17 points, three rebounds, and three assists from sophomore guard Kareem Tatum. The Camels knocked off their second 1998 Division III Tournament participant in the last four days. Connecticut College also defeated Springfield 96-87 December 9.

Illinois Wesleyan's Home Streak Ends
Benedictine ended Illinois Wesleyan's 46-game win streak at the Shirk Center by defeating the Titans 73-70 Dec. 9. Benedictine becomes just the second team to win at the Shirk Center since the building opened at the beginning of the 1994-95 season - the other coming to Manchester in the 1995 Elite Eight. Benedictine led most of the way and pulled ahead 62-52 with 3:14 to play. IWU mounted a charge, but key missed free throws by Nathan Hubbard and Andy Boyden in the final two minutes proved crucial. IWU had the ball with 12 seconds left, but Korey Coon's three-point shot at the buzzer rimmed out. The junior guard scored 22 points and Andrew Boyden had 16 to pace IWU, which falls to 4-2. Benedictine (5-3) was led by Jeremy Schoenecker's 20 points and Terry Frigo had game-high totals of 23 points and 13 boards.

Kean Bounces Back from Seton Hall Trouncing
By Kevin Reilly

Kean University showed great resiliency recently with a 77-76 victory against perennial D-III power College of New Jersey. Just a few days earlier the Cougars had attempted to climb up in class with a visit to in-state Big East neighbor Seton Hall University. Kean put up a valiant effort but was just not able to keep up with its Division I opponent.

The underlying theme for both these contests was that Kean coach Bruce Hamburger served apprenticeships at both institutions (New Jersey (formerly Trenton St.) and Seton Hall) while working his way up to his first head coaching assignment. Hamburger is a New Jersey native and grew up a short distance from Seton Hall and actually used to sneak into their gym as a youngster. He eventually coached alongside P.J. Carlesimo in the Hall's fabled Final Four appearance, now ten years ago.

Kean has been led this year by shooting guard Mark Stanley (who tallied 12 points versus Seton Hall) and swingman Alfonzo Thomas. Stanley was a 15 ppg scorer last year and Thomas was the NJAC Rookie of the Year two years ago. The starting unit is rounded out by point guard Majied Whitaker, forward Brad Martin and center Chester Brown. Getting significant minutes off the Cougars bench are Wade Walters, Mike Alfieri, Jon Burns and Raheem Townes.

Coach Hamburger is eagerly looking ahead to the rest of this season. He feels his squad can be most competitive in the well-respected NJAC. In the basketball-rich northern New Jersey area Kean has the capability to become a recognizable name at the small college level. Hamburger knows what it it takes to build and more importantly maintain a successful program. Keep your eye on the Cougars and the rest of the NJAC as the new year begins.

Kevin Reilly is a freelance writer from Cedar Grove, N.J. and covers Big East and MAAC basketball.

Gustavus Men Top Augsburg in MIAC Opener
MINNEAPOLIS - Three players scored in double figures for Gustavus Adolphus as the visiting Gusties snapped a 13-game regular-season conference home winning streak for Augsburg College on Wednesday night, topping the Auggies 80-69 in a MIAC game at Si Melby Hall. Bob Southworth led the winning Gusties (1-2, 1-0) with 20 points and five assists, while Mark McDonnell had 19 points and three assists. Luke Schmidt had 17 points and game highs of 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Gustavus led 37-35 at the half and pulled out to a nine-point lead, 62-53, at the 6:41 mark of the second half. But the Auggies (4-2, 1-1) used a 9-0 run -- seven points from Devean George to take its final lead of the game, 64-62, with 5:15 remaining. Gustavus again pulled away, however, with an 8-1 run to secure the game. George led all scorers with 30 points and six rebounds and was 8-for-10 at the free-throw line. Kris Long added 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

D-I Akron Beats Wooster 82-61
The Wooster Scots knew they would face a different Akron team Tuesday night from the team it faced two years ago, when the Zips faced Wooster riding a 23-game losing streak. And after defeating the Scots 82-61 at the James A. Rhodes Arena, Akron ran its overall record to 6-1. The full story, including an animated graphic sequence of a Ryan Gorman dunk, is on Wooster's site.

Amherst Men Finally Open, With Win
AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Junior guard Patrick Mulvey scored a career-high 32 points as the Lord Jeffs (1-0) took control down the stretch and routed visiting Clark (1-2). Clark had Amherst on the ropes early in the first before Mulvey got hot. The spirited guard went 4-for-4 to close out the half and supplied the Jeffs with a slim 34-32 halftime lead. Amherst came out firing on all cylinders in the second. Riding the momentum from a 13-2 run after the break, helped out by two three-pointers from Mulvey, the Jeffs took the lead for good coasted home for the 90-78 victory. Junior forward Chris Smith notched a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) while sophomore point-man Brian Daoust, fresh off the football field where he was just named First-Team All-ECAC at cornerback, came off the bench to pour in 13 points (8-for-8 from the line).

Platteville Extends Win Streak to Record 33
The Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team set a school record for consecutive wins by extending the nation's longest winning streak to 33 games with a 70-49 victory at Lakeland College Saturday. The 1994-95 Pioneers were 31-0, then won their first game of the new season to set the record at 32. Last year, the Pioneers were 30-0 and have won their first three this season. Merrill Brunson led the Pioneers with 18 points, while Dan Wargolet added 12 and Tim Duffy came off the bench to score 11. The Pioneers, national champions in 1991, 1995 and 1998, have the best record in collegiate basketball this decade at 239-25.

Ohio Northern Tops Otterbein on Last-Second Three
WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Kevin Sensabaugh drilled two three-pointers in the final 30 seconds, including the game-winner with two seconds remaining, to lift the Ohio Northern men’s team past Otterbein 73-71 in the OAC opener for both teams Saturday night at the Rike Center. The Polar Bears, the preseason favorite to win the OAC title, improve to 3-0 overall. The Cardinals, picked second in the OAC preseason poll, fall to 3-1 after opening the season with three road victories over NCAA Division II schools in Florida. Trailing 71-70 after Otterbein’s Chad Dresbach missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity with 19 seconds left, the Polar Bears calmly worked the ball around until Sensabaugh found an opening and canned his fifth three-pointer of the night to give the Bears the victory. Sensabaugh brought ONU within 71-70 by draining a three-pointer with 30 seconds left. Otterbein broke a 67-67 tie with a layup by Jason Dutcher at the 2:09 mark and two free throws by Ryan Roston with 53 seconds left. Jeremy Thompson and Scott Unverferth scored 18 points each and Sensabaugh added 17 for the Polar Bears. Otterbein placed five players in double figures, led by the 16-point effort of Scott Elliott. Kevin Weakley chipped in 15 points and Dutcher, Roston and Jeff Gibbs. The Cardinals out-rebounded the Bears 28-26, despite a game-high eight rebounds from Northern’s Mike Kluse.

Wheaton Tops Bridgewater State
The Wheaton (Mass.) Lyons (4-1) pulled off a huge upset with a 79-76 victory against the No. 3 ranked team in New England, Bridgewater State Bears (2-1). Wheaton was paced by Bill O'Brien's 19 points, and Justin Leftkowski's 16. Wheaton led by five with 30 seconds left, but a three-pointer by Nicholas Smith along with a foul on Wheaton's Lloyd Palmer gave Bridgewater a chance to tie the game. However, Tom McInnis missed the front end of the bonus, and Wheaton took control. Arnulfo DeLaCruz followed, making one of two free throws, and Bridgewater State's last-second three-point attempt by James Parriot was short. Mark Gonsalves led all scorers with 23 points, and Joe Andrews added 22 to pace the Bears. Wheaton is off to its best start since '93 when the team finished 20-5.

The win was the 350th career win for head coach Tom Finnegan '65, now in his 28th year at the helm of the Shoremen. Finnegan came to Washington College as a student-athlete in 1963, transferring from Seton Hall. In just two seasons he scored 1,120 points, and still holds the school records for career scoring average, season scoring average, points in a game, field goals in a season, field goals in a game, and free throws in a game. Returning to Chestertown to coach in 1970, Finnegan developed the Washington program into a consistent winner. In 1990, he guided the Shoremen to a school-record 25 wins and the Division III Final Four, where they finished third in the nation. In the last 18 years, Washington has had 16 winning seasons, appeared in four NCAA tournaments, and posted a record of 281-153 against Division III opponents. Overall, Finnegan's career record stands at 350-304.

Delaware Valley's women's team pulled off one of the big upsets in years by knocking off the University of Scranton, 75-71. Scranton came into the game 3-0 overall and have reached the NCAA playoffs the last seven years. However, guards Jeanne Waznak and Alisa DiBonaventura led the way for the Aggies, who are 4-0 for the first time since opening the 1988-89 season 8-0. Waznak, who is from Scranton, Pa., scored a game-high 26 points and the junior became just the fourth player in Delaware Valley history to reach the 1,000-point milestone for a career. DiBonaventura, a sophomore transfer from Division II Slippery Rock, added 21 points, 10 assists and five steals and hit two free throws with four seconds left to seal the win. It was Delaware Valley's third win against Scranton in 37 lifetime meetings and just the third time in 67 games that Scranton lost a MAC Freedom League game since the conference realigned the leagues prior to the 1993-94 season.

The visiting Wildcats (6-4) downed Anderson (2-2) despite Edge's performance. The senior added three steals and dished out seven assists. McMurry Upsets Division I Texas-Arlington
McMurry University overcame an 18-point deficit in the second half to upset Division I Texas-Arlington Tuesday at Texas Hall. It was the Indians' first win against a Division I program since 1979, avenging a 96-77 loss to the Mavericks last year. Texas-Arlington led 51-33 with 16:58 remaining in the game, before McMurry went on a 17-2 run to cut UTA's lead to 56-53 with just under 12 minutes to play.
