2001 men's tournament will feature 8 from Pool C
The 2001 NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament will feature 35 automatic bids and eight Pool C bids for runners-up in those conferences.

The addition was made possible because the American Southwest and Northwest Conferences qualified for automatic bids this season, shifting a large number of teams from Pool B (independents and non-qualifying conferences) to Pool A (conferences with automatic bids).

That leaves the breakdown as 35 Pool A teams, five Pool B teams and eight Pool C teams.

Kern's return from ACL success so far
Susquehanna's Karyn KernApparently, 6-2 senior center Karyn Kern is returning to form at Susquehanna -- returning for a fifth year after suffering a torn anterior crutiate ligament in her right knee in last season's fifth game. She received a medical redshirt year (more info on medical redshirts, click search box above). Kern posted double-doubles in wins last week over Moravian (64-52) and Allentown (67-65) -- the 47th of her Susquehanna career -- as she averaged 19.5 points and 16.0 rebounds. She scored a season-high 25 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the Moravian win, and had a season-best 18 rebounds with 14 points as her team sent Allentown to just its second loss in nine games.

After leading her team to a 5-0 start last year while averaging 26.2 points and 13.2 rebounds, the senior tri-captain has led her team to a 6-1 record heading into the semester break this season -- topping the team in scoring (16.9 ppg), rebounding (11.9 per game) and field goal percentage (57.1%). In the 12 games Kern has played over the past two seasons, Susquehanna is 11-1.

"She was a little hesitant as to how her knee would react at the start of the season, but I think she's getting more confident with each game now. She's getting sharper with all her basketball skills too because you have to remember, she couldn't even play basketball again until the middle of last summer," said 14th-year Susquehanna head coach Mark Hribar.

Kern is seeking to become the first basketball player in Susquehanna history, male or female, to score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds. She presently has 1,476 points and 879 rebounds. Susquehanna returns to action at the Lutheran Brotherhood Tournament at Cal Lutheran on Dec. 29-30.

Dzik wins 400th career game at Cabrini
Cabrini coaching staffRADNOR, Pa. -- Senior center Gabe Hargrove scored 14 points, and junior Gary Goldman added 12, as the Cabrini Cavaliers (3-4) defeated the Marymount Saints, 59-51, giving head coach John Dzik the 400th win of his coaching career. The Saints (1-6) were led by Dallas Crawley, who had a game-high 18 points.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Cavaliers and ended the three-week wait for the coaching milestone. Dzik has been the head coach at Cabrini for 21 years, compiling an overall record of 400-168 (.704).

After Marymount scored the game's first bucket, the Cavaliers went on a 16-0 run, capped by a Nate Harrell (10 points) bucket with 14:27 remaining in the half, to seize control of the contest.

Marymount cut the lead as close as seven on two occasions in the first half, but Cabrini finished the stanza with a 7-2 run to take a 12-point lead into the locker room at 31-19.

The teams traded baskets throughout much of the second half, but Crawley brought the Saints within five, 52-47, with a conventional three-point play with 3:34 remaining.

Goldman extended the Cavalier lead to seven with a one-handed dunk with 1:46 to play, and Cabrini clinched the win with three free throws in the last minute.

In Dzik's 21 years at the helm of the Cavaliers, he has posted 13 20-win seasons. Along the way, Dzik's teams have won titles in the following conferences: Keystone Athletic Conference, Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference, Eastern States Athletic Conference and the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference. In addition, he has guided the Cavaliers to nine postseason tournament bids (five NCAA, four NAIA). Dzik has been assisted by Mike Keeley (left) and Joe Kelley (right) for all 21 years.

Roanoke men lose second in a row
Another lackluster performance proved costly for the Roanoke men's team Monday night, as the Maroons lost to Randolph-Macon 63-54. The loss was the second in a row for the Maroons, who fall to 4-3 on the year and 1-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets return home at 3-3, 2-1.

The Randolph-Macon defense had the Maroons on edge for the entire 40 minutes. Roanoke committed 30 turnovers and shot just 34.7% from the field in the contest. The Yellow Jackets recorded 17 steals in the contest, led by six from freshman Ryan Stein. Eight Yellow Jackets posted at least one steal in the win.

Despite their poor play, the Maroons took a 34-25 lead into the intermission. The Maroons shot 38.5% from the field in the first half, but held the Yellow Jackets to 28.6%. After two free throws by Alex Phillips gave the Maroons an 11-point lead with just seconds left, RMC's Stein stole the inbound pass and converted an easy layup to trim the halftime lead to nine.

Jason Strickland's jumper early in the second gave RC a 10-point lead, but it was all Randolph-Macon from their on out. The Yellow Jackets quickly went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to one, and then took the lead for good with 9:20 remaining on a Stein free throw. After Strickland's jumper, the Maroons were outscored by Randolph-Macon 25-7 over an 11-minute span.

Stein finished the contest as the leading scorer, posting 16 points. He also had six rebounds to go along with the six steals. Jared Mills was the only other Yellow Jacket in double-figures in the scoring column, dropping in 12.

Colby Leftwich scored 12 points to pace the Maroons, while Robby Pridgen had 11, but was just 2-for-12 from the field. Leftwich added nine rebounds for RC, which won the rebounding battle 46-33.

The Maroons, who were without starting point guard Brad Dunleavy, suffer back-to-back home losses for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Roanoke is now off until Jan. 2, when it hosts Babson College in the first round of the V-Foundation Classic.

Wooster improves to 5-0, could be new No. 1
WOOSTER, Ohio -- Wooster extended the longest active home winning streak in NCAA Division III men's basketball to 36 games and improved to 5-0 on the season with a 75-59 win over visiting Earlham College in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Timken Gymnasium today.

The University of Chicago had owned the longest home unbeaten string in Division III at 38 games until it lost 85-67 to Lake Forest College this past Tuesday. Among all NCAA affiliated institutions, Wooster's current streak only ranks behind the University of Utah, which has won 54 in a row at home.

Carthage and UW-Stevens Point each received two first-place votes in the most recent poll.

The Scots held their largest lead of 22 points on three occasions before settling for the 16-point margin of victory.

In the first half, it was close for the first five minutes of play, but then Wooster went on a 15-2 run to open up a 15-point lead with 8:18 left before Earlham cut it down to 37-28 at the half.

Seven Scots scored seven or more points led by the starting backcourt of senior Nate Gaubatz and junior Antwyan Reynolds, who each scored 14 points and dished out four assists. In addition, Reynolds had a game-high four steals, which was just two less than the Quakers' entire total.

Other major contributors for Wooster included sophomores Matt Smith and Bryan Nelson, who added 12 and 10 points, respectively, with Nelson also grabbing a game-best seven rebounds.

Earlham sophomore Nathan Stoops had a game-high 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, however, no other Quaker scored more than seven points.
