By Pat Coleman D3hoops.com ASHLAND, Va. Sophomore guard Ryan Stein scored 17 points and Jared Mills added 13 points and 11 rebounds as
In the season's first meeting of heated rivals at the top of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, the Yellow Jackets (12-1, 7-0 ODAC) recovered from a 12-for-31 shooting performance from the floor in the first half to shot 50% in the second. But it was the Randolph-Macon defense that came through in the second half, limiting Hampden-Sydney to 25 points in the first 19 minutes of the half before a last-minute flurry of points brought the final margin. The Tigers (11-1, 5-1) had several wide-open looks in the first half. "I think we did a good job of finding shooters in the second half," said Yellow Jackets head coach Mike Rhoades. "I think we got sucked in in the first half." "Coach came in here and chewed us out and halftime," said junior forward Jared Mills, who scored 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting and blocked three shots. "We were able to rotate better in the second half." Hampden-Sydney, which outrebounded Randolph-Macon 39-36 but turned the ball over 20 times, jumped out to a 22-10 lead in the first 12:31 of the game, with 10 of the points coming on layups. "I don't think we were out of control," said Rhoades. "We were waiting for the game to come to us. Nobody was being aggressive." "That was us being excited, trying to play perfect defense" said Mills. "We went out a little bit pumped and lost track of what we were trying to do." The Yellow Jackets answered with an 8-2 mini-run of their own to cut the lead to 24-20, then got a dunk from Kurt Bergmann with 40 seconds left in the first half to bring the crowd of 1,872 to its feet and cut the lead to 30-28. Randolph-Macon opened the second half on a 13-4 run to take a 41-32 lead, including three free throws by Ryan Stein after he was fouled taking the first shot of the half. Stein and Bergmann added 3-pointers. The Tigers got three consecutive layups in a two-minute span to cut the lead to 43-41, but the Yellow Jackets never gave up the lead, and as the announced crowd filled Crenshaw Gymnasium to overflowing, Randolph-Macon held off Hampden-Sydney defensively despite twice going more than a minute and a half between baskets. "We have kids who anticipate well," said Rhoades. "We have to get a lot of delections. We may not always get the ball, but we disrupt their timing."
Hampden-Sydney turned the ball over just nine times in the second half, but rarely got open shots against Randolph-Macon's pressure. "We got three or four deflections when they cut it to three (58-55 with 3:16 left) and some key rebounds," Rhoades explained. Matt McKeag led Hampden-Sydney with 13 points, six of them in the final 35 seconds on three made free throws and a 3-pointer. Hampden-Sydney shot 21-for-55 from the floor (38.2%) and 3-for-11 from 3-point range (27.3%) on the game. Randolph-Macon was 25-for-57 (43.9%) and 5-for-23, but just 12-for-20 at the line, including a combined 5-for-11 for everyone but Stein. Hampden-Sydney sophomore David Willson led all rebounders with 15. |
