Marymount 79, No. 2 Catholic 70 ARLINGTON, Va. Catholic had its 20-game winning streak come to end at the hands of Marymount as the Saints held off the Cardinals 79-70 in a CAC game. After scoring just three points in the first half, junior Matt Hilleary finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. The Saints' Terry Hoffman led all scorers with 21 points. It was the first loss for Catholic since a 71-68 loss at William Paterson on opening night, ending the NCAA's longest winning streak. The Cardinals trailed for most of the first half but stayed within striking distance on the shooting of Craig Avallone. The junior scored 10 of his 16 points in the first period. With Marymount leading 30-26 right before the break, the Saints' Devin Archie and Hoffman connected to field goals in the last minute to send the teams into the locker room at 34-26. The second half saw Catholic climb back from deficits as great as 12 points and take its first lead of the game on sophomore Blair Mills' two free throws to make it 64-63 with just under five minutes to play. After trading baskets, the Saints' Archie used a baseline jumper followed by a 3-pointer to give Marymount (16-7, 9-3 CAC) a three-point lead with 2:09 remaining. On the next Saints possession, Hoffman sank one of his three 3-pointers to give Marymount a 73-68 lead and seal the upset. Hoffman added eight rebounds and two blocked shots to his game-high 21 points. Archie finished with 16 points and six assists, Carlton Phelps tallied 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Dallas Crawley finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Catholic (20-2, 11-1) received 11 points from junior Kevin Wise and nine points and nine rebounds from sophomore William Morley. Freshman Bobby Henning chipped in eight points and three assists before leaving the game late with an injury. As a team, CUA shot 25-for-65 (38.5%) while Marymount was 29-for-60 (48.3%). Each team was 11-for-13 from the free throw line. Plattsburgh
State 88, No. 4 Brockport State 76 The win allowed the Cardinals (14-9, 9-5 SUNYAC) to improve their home record to 12-0 with one home contest remaining. Their current total is the most home wins ever and the best home record since the 1955-56 season. Brockport (21-2, 12-2) is the highest-ranked opponent that PSU has ever defeated. Plattsburgh trailed just twice in the entire game, for a total of 1:51. There were three ties. The only Golden Eagle lead in the second half came at the 10:06 mark, on a layup by Brandon Mills for a 61-59 advantage. The lead was short-lived, however, as Jordan Ostrander tied the game at 61 with a jumper at the 9:03 mark and Chris Jura gave the Cardinals the lead for good with a jumper at the 8:43 mark. Sean Gorman gave Plattsburgh its first 10-point lead, 82-72, on a jumper at the 1:08 mark. The Cardinals came out on fire in the first half, taking a 7-0 lead in the first 2:35. Brandon Mills scored four straight points on a pair of free throws at the 14:30 mark and a layup at the 13:00 mark to give Brockport an 11-10 lead. Ostrander converted an old-fashioned three-point play at the 12:12 mark to take that lead back, and the Cards held a 38-34 lead at halftime after an Andy Ferris trey with 13 seconds left. Ostrander led all scorers with 20 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Ferris had 16 points, Jura, 15, and Darren Hubbard, 10. Gorman pulled down 10 rebounds. Mike Medbury scored 17 points to lead Brockport. Alex Smith had 15, Brandon Mills, 12, and Bryan Boswell, 10. Western
Connecticut 90, Keene State 83 The 5-9 senior guard shot 10-for-13 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the line for Western Connecticut, which improved to 16-6, 8-4 in the LEC. Keene State lost for the first time since a Nov. 29, 2001, loss at Springfield and fell to 20-2, 11-1. Aitor Albderdi was even more efficient, scoring 17 points in just 10 minutes, going 3-for-3 from the floor, 1-for-1 from 3-point range and 10-for-10 from the line. Keene State, which shot just 39.3% from the floor (24-for-61), was led by David Stantial's 27 points. Sophmore forward Marvin Evans scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half, helping Western Connecticut to a 41-37 lead at the break. Center Winston Grey, the Rider transfer who was still adjusting to his new environment when Western lost to Keene on Jan. 8, scored eight first-half points. He then blocked three Keene shots within a three-minute span as the game approached crunch time, help putting a lid on an offense that was begging to explode. Greys defense allowed the Colonials to build a 72-62 lead with 6:19 to play, a lead soon slipped to 82-81 with 58 seconds left as Chris Timson (21 points) hit his only 3-pointer of the game. But as Keene pressed following the Timson basket, Casey Bock escaped a double-team in the backcourt and threw a home-run pass to a wide-open Matthews, whose layup pushed the lead back to three points. When LEC player of the year candidate Dave Stantial (27 points) proceeded to set an illegal pick on Greg Cole, Cole hit two free throws with 40 seconds to go, gaining for WestConn a five-point lead. |
